its no secret that I havent been around much and most know that its due to having had an acl reconstruction (a ligament graft into my knee) It has only been partially sucessful with the leg still 5 degrees from being straight the nz accident compensation corporation is a state owned enterprise that everyone pays levys to in one way or another...anyway they are just about broke and as a way to perhaps save some cash they are looking at perhaps purchasing me a lighter gig rig that I can cart around myself rather than operate on the right leg as well and undergo another 5 months of rehab. That makes sense to me cos I dont really want to be that disabled for that long... sooo my query is....can I have opinions on lighter weight active speakers that are still grunty and nice sound for vocals they would have to be smaller in dimension than wht I am currently using and of course weigh less but I dont want to lose too much power EVP-X15 15" Two-way full range 45 -20kHz frequency response (+/-3dB) 8 ohms system impedance Trapezoidal enclosure 2 x 1/4" jacks and 2 x Speakon™ type connector Continuous 300W /Music 600W / Peak 1200W power handling H/D/W: 675 x 460 x 450 mm, 25.95kg on the back of my speaker it says 29kg maybe the newer ones have dropped 3 kg...1kg = 2.2lb thanks to any who offer an opinion...cheers |

My speakers are way too heavy for a small tender young girl like you.. 
(Yamaha PAS 300, mixer hides inside back of speaker) and, they are more suitable for small parties, not gigging. On a side note, I spoke with my knee surgeon yesterday, and I mentioned your procedure.. He was not amused..

If I converted correctly your speakers weight about 57lbs (25.95kg) Based on what I've read here on KS the JBL EON 515 would fit your needs Again I've read they sound awesome are JBL quality - powerful at 450watt and litewieght 32.5 lbs ? Good Luck |

jam what are the size of them? can I carry them and still see where I am walking? this will be a major factor in what, if anything they sanction a purchase of. I am 5'3" and once I have my speakers lifted I really cant see anything

Morgan, you can get the cases for the JBL 15", they are like a soft suitcase type with rollers, and a telescoping handle. Exactly like you see people in an airport pulling their luggage. That way, the only lifting is to get them out of your vehicle, and to put them on the stand. I also have the (crank up) stands, so you can set it to the lowest height, then crank them up. (Per the Dr.) They do use that style of surgery in thumbs and other joints tho.. My visit was good.. Dr. is pleased with my old/new knee..

Againg I heard GREAT things about those speakers --they say they can run with any 15" as far as sound quality. BUT expensive

well certainly expensive here that is for sure!!! If I can get away with 12in speakers I might even be able to put them on stands myself...I have to lay my current ones down and walk them upright...which of course puts horrible strain on the speaker stand. hey 2 x 2500 is still probably cheaper to ACC than an operation and rehabilitation for 5 months |

Vicki, at 32lbs, the new JBL 515 speakers are quite a bit lighter than the EON G2 15 that I have, and from what I have heard their sound quality is pretty impressive. The EON G2 15 weighs in at 20kg, which is still considerably lighter than your current speaker. srnitynow mentioned the roller cases... I have two of those from Gator and they certainly do make it easier to move the speakers around. Another suggestion would be to get a pair of crank stands, which make it a lot easier to raise the speakers once they are on the stand. As ACC are paying, I guess the actual cost is probably not as much of concern, but for you info, shipping the EON G2s to NZ a few years ago cost around $500. I had to pay NZ customs duty on the purchase price and GST on the combined purchase price and shipping cost. It still worked out to be about NZ$700 cheaper per speaker than if I'd bought them in NZ. Not sure how that would work out now that the NZ$ is stronger. |

If you are going to pick up the K series speakers I suggest adding the K Sub so you have enough bass. They are nice lightweight speakers. $2500 converts to $2300 USD That stinks I can buy those here less than $700 |

If you 'e doing 200 people or less you might want to consider a pair of Electro Voice Zx1s with a pair of Electro Voice Sb122 subs. The Zx1s weigh 18 pounds each and the subs weigh about 35 pounds each. I have no idea how much they cost in NZ. This is what I use and with a powerful amp around 500 wpc@8ohms it will sound great. Here in the states the Zx1 is around $275 each and the subs are about $375 each. Each Zx1 goes on a pole over a sub. It's a very simple and light weight setup. Another choice is the EV Sx360 powered speaker with no subs. A pair can do 250 people no problem. They are around 35 pounds each and here in the states they go for about $700 or $800 each. They sound fabulous and can get very loud. Since they're powered you would only need a mixer and a CD player or laptop to go with them. I own the passive version, the Sx300. They are crystal clear and great for vocals. The next step down is the Sx100(non powered) and they are excellent too. They won't go quite as loud as the Sx300, but they can handle 200-250 people no problem and they are very light, only about 32 pounds, the powered version-Sxa100-weighs 10 pounds more. The Sx100 is about $425 here, the Sxa100 is about $650 each. The light weight Sb122 subs are designed and intended to be used with the Zx1s, Sx100 or Sx300 and they give you a nice full sound that complements the tops. I know Warfedale makes the Titan which might be a lot less expensive over there in NZ. I haven't hear them, but you should be able to go and hear them where you live. The RCF ART310 is another speaker that you should go listen to if there are any dealers in your area that carry them. I would be surprised if you need 15" speakers unless you plan to NOT use a sub. If weight is a major concern you should definitely be looking at plastic speakers. The EV Zx4 has a 15" woofer and sounds great/goes loud, but it weighs 45 pounds and it's passive so you will need an amp to power it. If I was in your situation I wouldn't consider anything that weighs over 35 pounds and even that is probably more than what you should consider. That's why the EV Zx1 is so great. They are excellent for vocals, very clear and crisp. Even though the subs weigh 35 pounds each they don't need to be lifted up onto stands, they sit on the floor. This combination sounds better than any Bose I have ever heard too. |
