I've already got a powered 18" subwoofer and now I want to pole mount a powered three-way cabinet above it. Do I really need a 15" woofer in the active top speaker cabinet, or would a 12" woofer work better? I'm debating between the Carvin 1584A tri-amped cabinet

and the ISP triwedge.

Both will weigh the same. What advantages would one cabinet have over the other.

If you already HAVE 18" subs, then YES you can go as low as a 12" for the main. A dual 12" design would work better, but there aren't to many manufacturers that are making these designs anymore.

The tri-wedge design, even though is designed to be a floor monitor, can be used as a main with a sub. By itself, it would be lacking in the lower frequencies.
The Carvin, would give you a better bass response when the sub isn't needed.

I wouldn't plan on ever going without the subs anyway. I guess I'm wondering if there would be any kind of gap in the sound by not having a 15" in the mix. Plus, I like a strong and full midrange sound which I think the TriWedge's would be more capable of giving me. However, since I'm also needing a good mixer, I'm kind of tempted to go with the Carvin deal because it comes with their 16 channel mixer. Does anyone have any experience with these mixers. How would they compare to a Mackie CFX12?

Ahhhh!!! Go with the Carvin deal, or go with the TriWedges and a Mackie CFX12? I'm so confused!!! (a la Vinnie Barbarino) :?

I don't think you would have any lack of mids with the tri-wedge system. With a 12 & 10, you should be fine, ALTHOUGH, if you ONLY have 1 sub, you may want to go with the Carvin set-up because the others may be a little TO mid heavy with only 1 sub.

I'll be running two of the B-52 ACT18's with a powered 3-way pole mounted over each one. How do you think it'll sound?

Should sound pretty good actually. If it's too bass heavy, the B-52's have a volume control somewhere in line, right>?
But just make sure you'll be able to return them within a month just in case!!

They do have a level control built into them. Why do you think I might need to return them soon?

I don't think you will. But if you don't like the sound if you did get them, you don't want to be stuck.
I think the combo will sound pretty good.

I hope you're right. But in the off chance that I'm NOT happy with them, I'll be okay too since I had already made arrangements with the supplier when I bought them that if I weren't happy with them, then I could return them for an upgrade to a pair of the Mackie SW 1801's. We'll see how it goes.

Marty,

if you haven't already decided. Carvin recently came out with the TrX series. They look to be nice cabs.

I have the 1584's (unpowered). I think a couple of 1584A's with subwoofers would be great. Especially if you cross them so that the 1584 produces the upper bass (80-100 Hz and up) and the sub the lower bass. It is a pity Carvin discontinued the 1284's which was similar to the 1584 but with a 12" woofer.

From my limited experience I have found I like the 3-way option with a separate speaker for the midrange.
