I'm thinking of subbing a bad take of moondance where I was still figuring out the timing and the notes I wanted to sing....it's pretty funny to me. I hear people belittling themselves all the time on here without really having cause. I always wondered why anyone would sub something they thought or knew had problems- but after thinking about it- that process is actually my best learning tool. I record myself and listen... then I tweek and re record until I get it right.........maybe it could be helpful to someone to hear that process in action. But I sure don't wanna embarrass myself if no one would be interested. What'yall think bout it? How bout a bunch of us subbing 2 versions of the same song- one good and one not so much. Would anyone else find that interesting? Speak up you guys(and gals) this enquiring mind wants to know! |

I think some folks may know they have limitations and not be able to get a song just right, but they love a song so much that they're willing to give it a try and sub it flaws and all. I could easily sub a flawed version, but SS may not still be around by the time I got the good recording done!

OK...I ain't skeered! But I tried to listen to some subs yesterday and the player opens= but so progress bar ever comes up. So I can't hear anyones subs- gotta get that fixed before I sub the clunker!  !
Anyone else hate VISTA as much as me? I know that's where the problem is with the player! |

| First of all, you have to have an ear to know what's not so right, and what is right. Are we talking wrong pitch? Wrong mannerisms? No control? Speech impediment? Lack of range? etc...etc...the list goes on and on for someone who's not a pro singer.
Everything I do is a "bad take", then I settle on one of several takes to let the internet hear. Letting the real world hear you is where things get down to serious embarrassment.....or? I kinda know what you mean though. I've heard internet singers put songs out that were totally not good enough and wondered.....does he or she even know what they sound like? Have they proof listened at all? Is what they're hearing really something good to them? Do they already have loads of support that it doesn't really matter what they sound like? Singing in public and singing on the interent are two different animals. And one is sure to bite your a$$ and make you wonder.....what happened?
That's why I no longer sing in public!

...Naw I just found some of the takes i did when I was still trying to learn the Moondance..I screwed up and came in 2 measures early on the 2nd verse...LMFAO! I got really creative with the phrasing to try and cover it with some vocal BS...anyone who knows the song can plainly hear the "oh Sh!t- what do i do NOW?" going on in my voice. I also have some pretty interesting takes of Etta James "Fool that I am" which I am STILL learning...I only listen to the original enough to get a feel for the song..then I try to allow the lyrics to come as they feel right to me. It means hitting some clunkers...screewing up the phrasing, and even doing some things vocally that may not "work" for whatever reason. But you never know until you try...and ...you will never learn unless you are adventurous. Plus. you will never be any better than whatever the original is if "as good as the original" is the cap you set for yourself. I listen to Streisand- who listened to Garland..and i hear how Barbara takes what Judy taught her and elaborates on it. She makes it "better" with that new knowledge...I'd like to think that the original version of any song I do is a "starting place" ...then add to it to make it uniquely "me" and hopefully either "as good as the original but in a different way" or "better" than the original. The takes I was referring to as "bad" are definitely NOT either of those scenarios- but I thought that some people might be interested to see where the learning process started- VS where it ended up. It might also allow people to follow the process I follow when I am tweeking a song. Everyone who hears me live...or any of the students I teach...all want to know how I make songs they have heard a million times so "new" Well - this is it. But it only helps as a tool if the person listening has a discerning ear and not such a big ego. (yeah I know! I admit to having an ego- but I can still hear a big ole earfart when i issue one!  )You HAVE to be able to admit to yourself "Oh THAT sucked!" and either try again with something different or move on to another song that suits you better. One song I have always been bitter about not being able to do is 'Chaka Khans" "I feel for you" I can HIT the notes..but the quality of my voice just isn't nice to listen to...very piercing...when I lower the key it sucked all the energy out of the song...that was one I just can't do...and another one that no matter how i try to sing it...and what key i sing it in...it just doesn't fit the breaks in my chest and head voice...is Lou Rawls "you'll never find" and I've been trying to find a way to do this one for 17 years...I just SUCk on this song no matter what and I HATE that because i LOVE the song! ...ya have to know your limitations. When i get a bad take...it helps...I can narrow down what's workable and whats hopeless quickly...then determine which versions of the song sound best...and finally...after NUMEROUS "bad" takes..I not only end up with a good one but I have learned the song- AND I learned it as "Me" not me imitating someone else! Thats why I though a few might be interested in this post...but guess not.
