After last night I know I've got to handle it differently. I've always allowed a song to be repeated as long as it's not in the same round and separated by at least an hour. But last night we had three Gunpowder and Leads, two Roosters, and two Not Ready To Make Nices!

When the third Gunpowder And Lead started, the room was about ready to load their shotguns and shoot the KJ!

I may just make it a policy to allow a song to be sung just once per night and that's it. But there's a middle ground some of you take - I think. Don't some of you let a song be repeated if the first singer has left? How has that worked?

I'm looking for a compromise area here. If there is such a thing. Any ideas appreciated.

#1 I never allow repeats if its meant to show up the previous version
#2 Never in the same round or rotation
#3 I'll always advise that the song had been sung previously

You can't get away with what my running mate does -- he claims CompuHost won't let him do the same one twice in a night!

I have a once a night policy. I have been known to ignore the first time done in the evening if it was way early in a near-empty room. There are 60 slots to sing in my shows, and it shouldn't be that difficult to find 60 songs. If you only have one song, either come early or learn another one!

Anyone who runs Compuhost knows that's not true. That said I agree with Mckyj57 on once only.

First come first serve on songs. Once a night. In the RARE exception I will allow a duplicate must be at least two hours between & the original singer gone - otherwise pick another song.

I usually say no repeats if the singer really insists to sing a song that has already sung after a couple warnings I let them do it. So far about 5 repeats in 150 or so shows. If it is a real long show and if it has been 2+ hours I am less restrictive.

As you know I had a problem with repeats recently. It has only happened to me once in about the last 5 yrs using my method. It was more my own fault though for not sticking to my guns.

I have always allowed songs to be sung more than once because it usually isn't an issue. I simply explain the song has already been sung, but if they'd like to sing it at the end of the night after time has passed that's fine. Most people don't take me up on the offer and would rather sing something else, so it is rare. At least 2 rounds of singers needs to pass or a few hours.

It maybe hard to change rules after people have been used to being able to do it. You could ease into it by saying the same song can't be sung in a 3 hour period. Also don't allow a song to be sung 3 times, Ouch ! I'd never allow that.

I don't think there is anything wrong with just asking people to choose another song that the song sung twice in a night isn't received by the crowd well.

I've been thinking about this, and what I'll tell the room tonight is that they can still sing a song that's been done before, but only if a considerable time has passed and a good portion of the crowd that heard it the first time has left. And I'll explain to them that I'm working in their best interests, and that they will go over better if they do something that hasn't been sung yet.

We'll see how that goes over. Kind of what Babs and Dr Fred do but not as restrictive as Lonnie and Micky.

Gig report: The only repeat I had last night was "Basket Case" and they were spread three hours apart by chance, so I really didn't get to try things out.

And it was slow. As slow as last week was busy. Maybe a result of Memorial Weekend not being the last weekend of the month this year and everyone was cashed out. Dunno.

The real test will come on a Thursday when everyone wants to sing "Santeria".

I usually don't allow repeats at all.

I make an occasional exception (like Lonman), if a) the first Performer of that particular song has left and b) there was hardly anyone in the place, when it was sung first.
