Okay. Another dumb question... What does a mic preamp do?

It simply bumps the volume of the microphone before it goes to the amp. That could help you out by...

You'll keep the main microphone down on your amp/mixer which could end up with less feedback.

Cool! Thanks Sammy! I have a powered mixer now but am looking into a passive mixer with powered speakers. I notice a lot of people use the Mackie DFX12 which I believe includes mic preamps. What mixer would you recommend for a pair of Mackie SWA1801's and a pair of Carvin 1584A's? I do mostly small clubs indoor and outdoor, and a few reception halls now and then.

All mixers now days have a mic preamp built in of some sort. Some are better than others. External mic preamps are geared more for the studio. Live settings CAN wreak havoc with feedback.

I went to The Guitar Center last night in Austin and was looking at the Mackie mixers. I like the simplicity (AND the price) of the DFX12, but I REALLY like the mid range EQ for the channels and the separate sub output on the CFX12! I'm just wondering how involved a mixer like that would be to run compared to the simpler ones out there. :?

The CFX is what I run. Look at it this way, "learn" 1 channel, then you know the rest of the board - so to speak. Mixers are not hard, even the bigger ones. most of the knobs are either part of the eq, or effect & monitor sends.
