Post subject:  laptop without s-video

I recently bought a HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr Entertainment laptop with no s-video and running vista. I have a vga to s-video adaptor running through a rf modulator but it still will not show up on my tv. Already went into display settings and enabled 2nd display and still nothing. Am I missing something like a driver, setting, etc. Would appreciate any help I can get. Thx.

Have you tried restarting the computer with the tv already turned on? Sometimes that will do the trick.

Yes I did. We even hooked up a friend's laptop that has a s-video out and it worked. We just can't get mine to.

Ok, so you know the rf modulator is not to blame as it worked with another laptop with s-video. You have enabled display settings correctly...I guess I would suspect the vga to s-video adapter as the likely culprit, any chance you can test that with your friends laptop as well?

Within this thread vga to s-video is discussed http://www.karaoke-forum.com/viewtopic. ... vga+svideo

Look for member Gyrf and perhaps pm him as he is doing what you wish to do.

Wait a minute. You used their SVideo? Why not try their VGA? To test things properly you need to duplicate the condition. Otherwise you don't know if it is the VGA->Svideo adapter or your PC.

Also, "enabling second display" doesn't sound right. You want to go to extended desktop mode, with Notebook as primary and Monitor as secondary.

Most laptops have a Fn / Function key which when combined with certain keys changes the display from Internal / VGA / Both. What happens when you operate that key?

if extending your desktop doesnt work...get a vga to TV convertor from Radio Shack..as opposed to a vga to s video that you already have

I have been using a Dell C400 without an S-video out for some time. I tried a VGA to s-video converter as well without luck. Even when I had 2nd monitor configured. Some lappys simply will not work in this configuration.

The solution was to use a VGA to TV scan converter. I have one I use all the time and a backup. It allows me to run a VGA lcd for the singers, and I can run S-video or video (or composite) out of the converter to a second television for the patrons to see. The extra box and cables are a little bit of a drag, but without s-video, it is the best solution.

Here is my least expensive converter:

That's just a VGA->SVideo converter that also does RCA and VGA out. At least as far as I can tell. I use the same thing, but I have no problem whatever I use.

The key is to find extended desktop mode. Sometimes you can obtain it by updating your video drivers.

We use the VGA on our PC computers and what I have found you need to be hooked up from the computer to the TV before turning on computer for it to reconize it. Try connecting everything then turning computer on.

We tried the vga to s-video adapter again and we do have a signal going to our tv but the picture is all distorted and fuzzy. So it appears the adapter is working, just not getting good picture.

I am using a hp dv4 which is basically the same, the hdmi out works great if you have a hdmi capable monitor, but I also have a vga to video adapter, it works as well. but don't even bother with buying the hdmi to video cable, they dont work at all.

sure you're on the right "input"... If you're using a RF Modulator, you might be on the wrong channel. Check the modulator or the channel setting

Sounds to me like you might be set to PAL instead of NTSC. Check for a little switch with those two options and change it.

I'm using NTSC and on right channel. Borrowing a buddy's equipment for gig tonight but just ordered a VGA to RCA/S-VIDEO/VGA converter box on monoprice.com. Hopefully that will take care of it.

Or you got a device that does not support the resolution of your computer. You can try to adjust the second screen resolution down and see if you can see a clear picture. Most converter will support up to 1280x1024 maximum. If you laptop is 15", some will support up to 1920 x 1200, wide screen.
