who worked?
i was at the same venue as last year and i video taped a small segment of it last year with my phone and did it again this year
last year, we didn't have karaoke. if i remember right, i just played music all night and the crowd came late because the venue didn't advertise NYE and told me last minute they wanted me to come in on a NYE night which wasn't my regular karaoke night. so no one even knew i'd be there
this year, again, no advertising but i did karaoke because there were folks there already despite that it wasn't advertised and tho it's not my karaoke night folks know I'm a KJ and wanted to sing. i didn't expect any singers, but folks got into it, so we sang all the way up to and after NYE. back-to-back singers. there was even a buffet. all this wasn't advertised. it was a good NYE tho. usually in the past we've had tv screens in the background showing NYE. this year it was a college game on the tv. we actually missed NYE because someone was singing at the moment it hit.

I didn't work, but my host did. Busiest night of the year for the club.

I did a one off at a new place just to try it out. It wouldn't turn into anything until the weather changes as their winter space is too small to get in enough people but i wanted to be busy that night so I took a minimal set up and gave it a go. It was really fun. They serve food so younger people could come in and they had ages from 18 to 60s. It was mainly 20 somethings but they were exceptionally polite and there was no drama or fights. There were lots of good singers. As small as it was, some people did a car count at the main bars in town and this place had them beat by a long shot. Best for me was that it was a no-smoking place in a smoking state--a luxury. I hope the want to continue but there are a lot of beer hosts who can pop in there between now and spring so it's a fingers crossed situation. But some of the people who attended are campaigning....

I DJ'd every New Year's Eve for at least 30 years... but for the past ten years, since I've given up doing mobile DJ gigs to concentrate on karaoke, I've also given up working New Year's Eve... Normally, I'll attend or host a house party, but this year a miserable cold & cough put a damper on my plans... I ended up staying home... watching TV... and consuming bowls of chicken noodle soup. Fell asleep on the couch, and didn't even see the ball drop.

I haven't done one for 6 years, since I moved to Florida in the winters. Don't have the call, and don't have the juice , as my big rig is up north. (A pair of YX-15Ps does not a disco beat make.)
I sort of miss it when I go to our annual party and the DJ bombs, because I think "I could have done better than that". But for the most part, I don't miss the 3am stuff.

My wife and I were invited to a big NYE party but she wasn't feeling well so we spent the night at home. The next day she was way worse so we spent the entire day in the hospital trying to find the problem. A CT scan showed several pockets in her large intestine, but none showed signs of trouble. Upon closer examination of the scan they saw inflammation of the gall bladder. They strongly suggested it to be removed that evening, she declined and went home with a 10 day supply of Cipro and flagyl.
Here is were it gets really weird, on the way out, we run into my alternating show host and he is coming in with almost the identical symptoms as my wife. The ER was swamped with people, at that time, and he was on his way home without treatment. We convinced him to stay and he called me the next morning to thank me because his appendix had ruptured and they had to remove it that night.
That was how my new year started.

I took the night off. I had private party offers, but I really wanted to go to this NYE party instead, and it was incredible. Got to meet meet and watch a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer play for two hours in a bar that holds about 250 people. Insanely tight band and the sound was perfect. He spared no expense on his new playhouse. Not to mention it was about a 10 minute drive home! http://www.darylshouseclub.com

I did not work NYE and instead hosed a party with good friends at my house.
Of our 5 regular Wed night gigs, 2 bars chose to close early to avoid NYE drunkeness issues. The other 3 had bang up nights. Two other venues added NYE and also had a great night.

Since I haven't hosted a show in almost 2 years now, I decided to go out. I went to a local bar where I used to host Karaoke on Halloween and NYE (until they hired a KJ to do a regular weekly show there... I have no hard feelings over that). I had a decent time there, but the KJ dissed me twice.
I never met this KJ before, and she didn't know me either. She works for the KJ who does the regular weekly shows there. First off, she started 1 hour late. Prior to her starting the show, I approached her and asked if she could play from my Flash Drive. She politely told me that she couldn't. I then gave her a song title for my first request. There was one person who had given her a request before me. The show finally started, and she played a full song (as filler music) after the first singer. I was near the stage area (in anticipation of being called next), and she called someone else to the stage. I went back to my seat. After this person finished, she played another full song (as filler music) before calling the next Singer to the stage. It wasn't me. After she repeated this routine, and a total of 5 Singers had been called up, I went to look at the monitor. She had the Rotation scrolling at the bottom. I did not see my name scroll by at all. I then appraoched her, and asked what happened to my name. She then said that she had some technical problems, and had to reset the system and re-enter everyone.... So??? what happened to me????????? She then entered my name, and called me up.... 2 singers later.
When I was finally called up to the stage, I handed the KJ a napkin with 2 songs listed on it. I told her that these were for my next couple of turns. That was at 11:50 PM. At Midnight, we had our NYE Countdown, and the Bar gave out free Champagne. Then the show continued. The KJ continued to do the same thing... Singer, Full Filler Song, Singer... After 2 hours of waiting, I still had not been called up to the stage, and I know that there had been 1 or 2 Singers that had been up more than once. I went to look at the monitor, saw a Rotation list of 12 people, and guess what.... my name was not there... AGAIN!!!. I approached the KJ (AGAIN), and asked her what happened to my name. She said that she had lost the napkin I gave her with my song titles. I looked on the floor, and saw it right by her feet. I picked it up and handed it to her. She then entered me in the system... at the END of the Rotation. That was at 2 AM. I went back to my seat and didn't say a word. At about 2:30 AM, one of the other customers at the bar asked me when I was going to sing again. I told him what happened, and that it's probably going to be at least 1 hour. He said that he was going to approach the KJ, and I asked him not to. He went anyway. At 3 AM, my name was called. I sang my song, and then I left for the night.
I sent an e-mail to the KJ who normally runs this show, and expressed my complaints about his fill-in KJ. Not only did she drop my name from the Rotation (TWICE), but, when she gave me that flimsy excuse about losing my song request slip, she didn't even attempt to look for me and ask for a new song request.

She has no vested interest in keeping people happy. I guarantee her friends however had a GREAT time and sang all night.

Not very likely with a full (filler) song played in between every Singer. That doubled the wait time for the 12 Singers in the Rotation to a 2 hour wait time between Rotations.

Did a NYE party at a local brewery where I did a Halloween show this year. Demand was high for me to return. I suggested karaoke, as that's my specialty, and I could ensure them a great turnout, whereas just doing a DJ gig wasn't going to draw a crowd. (I'm a perfectly acceptable DJ, but I know where my strengths lie.) They ended up not going for it, and therefore they were rather quiet on NYE. Someone requested Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in the middle of a particularly upbeat set.... it certainly wasn't my best New Years' gig. The site of my best weekly karaoke show decided to close on NYE, so I had to take whatever money I could get. Fortunately, NYE falls on the night of my normal weekly engagement there next year, so we're already trying to get the ball rolling on planning an epic blowout. This year was a bit of a bust, but we'll make up for it in 2016.

For the third year in a row I did a private party for a bunch of retired cops and their families. Needless to say, cops know how to party. Great time as always and a fat tip at the end of the night!! I missed my wife not being with me on NYE , (she was doing a gig, too) but still had a good time and made some coin!!
