Post subject:  Rank & Comments on submissions

Recently someone sent an email asking:
:?: "...is it possible to make it so we can leave comments without casting a score..."

Well, the answer is No.

:!: Reasons:

We would like you to rank the performance.

The comment section is to either:
1) explain why you provided that score
2) give the submitter critiques of their performance
3) let them know that you enjoyed it

Preferrably you would do a little of each, but at least one of the first two.

The comment section is not to start a conversation/discussion, that is why we have the forums. :D

I hope that helps explain our position.

Thank you & ENJOY!

Phill

Post subject:  Sabotage Ratings from other people?

I have a question/complaint (albeit trivial). I've noticed that someone under the name "Leasa" completely blasted all of my submissions (with 1 and 2 ratings) without leaving any comments. Further, it did not appear that this person rated any other songs. What gives? There should be some safeguards in place so that songs cannot be arbitrarily blasted (especially by someone who hasn't even submitted any songs).

Yeah those are blatantly disrespectful ratings. I agree, users should be required to submit before they can rate.

I agree, members should have songs posted before they can rate. Seems some people are just plain mean and have no business rating submissions if they are not contributing. Also, it should go both ways, you should NOT be able to rate without leaving a comment! There should be some kind of constructive comment or reason for the score they gave. Especially if it is a low score. Otherwise, it just looks blatantly rude!

I disagree. I do not sing but I go to karaoke clubs and contests and the people who get to pick the winners are folks in the audience. I consider myself a part of the audience who is giving feedback on what I hear and I try to be constructive but I am not a music coach or a music teacher so I cannot give helpful singing tips. I know what I like when I hear it and that is what I rate on. For folks who are being mean, well something should be done with that I believe I read somewhere that there are people watching. But I don't think that folks who cannot sing be not allowed to rate. That is like asking only people who sing can buy music. thank you.
I wonder why is it important for folks to submit a song so that if you don't like the way they sing you can rate them in the same manner they do? I thought this place was for folks to come and listen to regular people sing. Now if this is a place for just singers then that is a different story, then I will leave BigStick

I am in no way saying that non~singers are not qualified! I guess my point is this: There are unscrupulous people (who by the way, could very well be singers) that go in and get a separate nic name in order to sabotage another persons score and they have nothing to lose ... if you are familiar with DTS then I'm sure you know what I am talking about! This "Leasa" is a good example .... no comment ... just a rating of "1" with no explaination. She won't be the first or the last to abuse the system. I guess a good remedy for this would be to let everybody comment and give their opinions, but only allow the people who have put themselves on the line to rate. "Judge and be Judged"

I see your point. so what I will do if the rules changes to submit something. I know it will be a low score, because I can't sing all that hot, but at least with a submission I can still rate people. To me that is the fun of being on here. if this is just a place to listen i can listen to people on the radio or play my own music.

That's cool Big Stick ... I'm sure you're not all that bad! You seem to have a good ear! Give it a shot! It's FUN!!! I would also like to add that I think your ratings have been good and fair Big Stick ... but it's people like "Leasa" that ruin it for the rest. Therefore, there should be some kind of safeguard in place to keep this kind of thing from happening.

I find it interesting that the "ratings" game is so hotly contested. I submitted a song and was not aware that one could request not to be rated (hell, it took me all night to figure out how to get the file converted and squished so the devilish thing could be submitted!!) so I did not do so....I was pleasantly surprised to find the song well received, but was not really expecting a high rating...some people like my "style" some don't. The point is I just like to perform...and I like for people have a good time...so I sing for my entertainment and to entertain and I guess what surprises me is the competitive atmosphere....I wouldn't have thought it....oh, well, you never know, do ya?....as my momma always said.."sticks and stones...."

Hi - I'm fairly new here and am one of those who rate that don't yet have any songs posted yet. I don't sing very well, but that's not why I don't have a song on yet - just haven't been able to figure out how to get my song recorded and downsized, etc. Will do that soon. But I do go to karaoke shows AT LEAST once a week and sing and clap and hear many, many singers and believe I am a little qualified to be able to tell what is good and what might need to be improved upon if it is really obvious - and I have tried to be real honest about my ratings - I don't leave ratings without a comment. When I get one of the songs I do on here, I would hope that people would also be honest with me and give "constructive criticism" where the need be. I know what it feels like to get some big encouragement and when I have done well, and also what it feels like to flop (which I have done many times at the mic), yet still get very encouraged by everyone - but I do know when I haven't done a very good job (and actually wish lotsa times that people would let me know where I need help and if I should continue to do the song or try something else that I might sound better at). I have seen on here where people have rated someone a 1 or 2 when it is not deserved, and that is not right and brings down someone's rating, but like myself, I hope others go into those songs that may be rated lower - not just the 9s or 10s - and listen and give their own opinion - seeing obviously that that person that rated them a 1 or 2 might have made a bad judgment on a song, or possibly even a mistake in their rating accidentally. So I hope all you singers that have posted don't mind me giving ratings/comments on here - and hopefully, eventually, I will get a song on too (though you may cringe at it - LOL - a 1 or 2 is fine with me if it sounds that bad and I DEFINITELY won't retaliate or take revenge). Just wanted to comment as one who hasn't posted a song yet. And, Sheraokee - I think you are awesome, by the way! Oh, am I wordy or what  ! Sorry! Thank goodness I don't make up my own songs - they would last for hours!

I've had a real fun time here since the first few days of this sites inception
but now I've had to cancel my membership to singers showcase because of one punk (you know who you are) who blasted one of my songs from 10''s
across the board he gave it a 2 with no comment at all. So i sent him a respectful e-mail informing him that I don't mind the two rating but unless he had a personal problem with me, he should at least leave some constructive criticism. I also told him that i thought his subs were terrible (my opinion)
But I wouldn't rate them because I would have had to give them both a 1
He then went on to tell me of his drag queen karaoke performance and basicly he couldn't care less what I thought. he then gave me a 6 on another song and called me an a-hole and for some reason an antichrist
(whatever dude)so it was on,and I gave both of his subs the 1 rating that I felt they didn't deserve (no 0 Rating).anyway it's been fun and I hope the rest of you have better luck and respect each other.
Goodbye,and God bless all.

Thank you so much for the great compliment hotchylde! :D I only just saw it today and it is much appreciated!

KJ Denndogg, this is the very reason I feel that we should have the option here "NOT" to be rated ..... and yet still have the comments. I believe I saw that Phill is working on this option. The comments are the most important thing in giving one a feeling of how that particular song is received! It take's the UGLY competitive aspect out of things and lets people simply enjoy the music and not feel they are in a competition with each other! For those that WANT feedback and constructive criticism ... (ie. a rating) they should have that option too! The ratings game can get ugly .... you are not the first or the last that this will happen to. Those low scores can sting like a hot iron! If you leave .... this person wins! The most important thing to remember is WHY we sing in the first place. Because we LOVE IT!!! Don't let anybody take that away from you!!!!

Keep rockin' on brother!

If you feel that someone has given you an unfair, abusive or vendicitive rank or comment, please contact me. I would like to track this person or persons. This way we can take the appropriate actions to prevent this from reoccurring.

We are working on many enhancements to the Singer's Showcase, we have already completed some repairs.

Thank you & Enjoy!

Personally i don't see any reason to Restrict those who have not submitted a song from rateing. I have songs submitted but quite frankly I enjoy listening and rateing others performances just as much as I enjoy recording and submitting my own. Being able to sing dos'nt make anyone an athority on talent. I don't remember Barry Gordy's solo album but he's certainly an athority on talent. To limit non singers as a deterent to rateing abuse is unfair. I'm sure there's many members here that come in just to enjoy the talent that submits here. They should be allowed to comment and rate. I understand that everyone works hard on there recordings and want to be well received but there is gonna be some mean spirited people sometimes. I think everyone gets the picture when we see a group of high rateings and one extremely low one. Besides, people who submit are not always objective. You can just check some of their rateings and see who the cliques are. We may need to just toughin-up our skin and deal with it. Sometimes singers can be such babies. Lets brush the sting off ( or knock the chip off our shoulders in some cases) and get back to having fun :D .

Songaddict,
OF anybody you sir, have been quite fair to all on the singer board. I never expected to get a poor quality song that the effects and all the tracks came apart upon compression on..

I really found out that high end recording really is an art when compressing to a file the size of an pin head. (see pic of **********)

because it really usually is a mess when it comes down to starting out with 16+ tracks in full stereo and effects plug-ins then converting them all to mono tracks and mixing them down to 1 single mono track and mastering it to a 32 bit track it's really ugly when you get to a finished product and almost everything you have started with is either compressed away or out of key. So I just live with it.

As we all say in karaokeville usa... "It's all in fun"

Post subject:  Banning Replies?

What about an option to ban particular users from commenting on our submissions? Like if we got a rude comment we could just go in and delete it and ban that person from commenting on our songs. That would end the hurt feelings and give the singer more control over their songs.

Jodie...
I have been to the Professional music industry.. and have sang in large compeititons.. I'm sorry to say, it's going to happen. Ya just gotta take the good with the bad and learn to deal with it. I do on a daily basis.
Singing and karaoke is NOT a pretty business and it's cutthroat.
ya wanna play, ya gotta be better than the rest, and the trash talkers will be out there.. also the bad critics will too. Just let it go..

I didn't get to a label and on stages in Nashville without "Just being Me" and doing my thing.

I paid my dues, they will make you pay yours here too just like anywhere else.

Just have fun with it.. like in the "Karaoke Spirit"
