That is the question. Is there any difference that you can tell between zipped mp3 + G vs. separate mp3+G? Does it make that much difference in file size? I'll most likely be using Compuhost as my software and that is why I was wondering. It has an option for either.

Thanks,
Ken

No difference in quality. Zip.. The mp3 is compressed already it compresses the cdg file and makes a difference in file size.

(Oh no! Cue exweedfarmer to explain how the reliable lossless technology in use for now decades is really insidiously risky and can crash your computer.)

Zipping your MP3+G files will save you anywere from 1-3 megabytes a song, probably about 1.5M-2M on average. If you have 10,000 karaoke tracks, you save 15G-20G off a total of about 50G. Add your DJ tracks in there too, plus any disk space you need to record.

So if you have a laptop with 80G, it is really beneficial. If you have 200G, or use a large external drive, it doesn't matter that much.

There is no appreciable difference in performance in a karaoke application.

Look at the files in the "Details View." Choices like, Tile, Icon, List, Details.
Then you can see the sizes. If you have a lot of songs... Leave them Zipped.

Kind Regards,

Thank you for the cue but I'm tired of explaining that it's not just this uncecessary process that I object to but any unnecessary process. It wouldn't have to be zipping, the man could fire up his browser at the beginning of each song (it would take about the same amount of time and accomplish about as much.) Having the computer do something is much more likely to make it crash than not having it do something. People need excercise computers don't. Even if the zipping process works perfectly it doesn't mean that some other application doesn't have a memory leak and your perfect zipper won't overwrite the other application's buffer and crash goes your computer.

What it comes down to is that zipping karaoke files is stupid. I can't fight stupid. Not going to try anymore.

97,000 files zipped takes less that 400 gig.. (So I hear) 8)

at what compression, Jerry? Most of the ones I've seen were done at 128kbps.

That's the way I started out, but I made a change to mine after hearing the difference and seeing the hard drive storage go up and up!

Well, for those who use the Zip format, just make sure NOT to spend money on Winzip, there's a FREE one that is better in my opinion

Actually, for karaoke ZIP you usually don't even need a Zip program. PowerKaraoke and MTU rippers rip directly to the format, and the karaoke hosting programs play directly from it.

True, but not everyone uses these software, I don't and Audiograbber or CDG Ripper don't offer the zip! And someone who have already extracted in mp3+g might decide to zip  I think it would be a shame to spend on WinZip when you can get the same for free

Then there is also MP3+GToolz which is freeware as well that will do the job. But I would spend the money on Powerkaraoke's Ripper as it contains a convertor inside of it that will take any unzipped files that you may have done with Audiograbber and zip them for you.
