Post subject:  What to do first ?
Because of limited funds :shock: $$$ I'm not sure what I NEED to buy first........ I know I need to buy a new mixer and have decided on the Mackie DFX12 ($239) ....But I can't afford that right now and my problem is the Vocopro mixer (KJ7000) I AM using right now cuts out when ever the volume is turned up and some one sings loud (No they are not really screaming just Belting out usually the end of the songs) The meters on the mixer pinn and the entire sound shuts down for a second or two..pretty embarrasing . So I THINK I need a limiter/compressor thingamajig .......... Which I can afford ( $100-125) RIGHT ?????
Do I get the compressor/limiter NOW and push back getting the Mackie or should I splurge for the Mackie hoping the new mixer will give me some more headroom ? compared to the Vocopro crap ???..I know eventually I NEED BOTH .....But what should I do first :cry: :cry:

Sounds like the amp is clipping - I know amp isn't turned up to MAX is it?

Try turning your mic/music in's down and the master up.

Wait for the Mackie


Check that the Line/Phono selector is on "line"

Hey Jam, Check out your "Talkover" switch. Once I inadvertantly turned my talkover switch on and had all kinds of problems. The switch caused my mixer signal to be cut by at least 50% and the overcompensation caused havoc.

I don't use the vocopro board but maybe its the talkover? Just guessing bro.

BJC...I know exactly what you are talking about from past experience! :oops: :oops: But this time I'm getting plenty of power and the mains are no where near max nor is the individual volumes or amp.
and I dont think the talkover switch is on ...BUT I will check :wink:

:?: On the back of the Peavey PV1200 power amp there are the output gain controls right? I have them turned to about 2:O Clock (just a little right of dead center) iS that a GOOD :D or a BAD :oops: thing?

Either way I'm going to go for the mixer as soons as I possibly can

I've always ran my amps wide open, maybe a little less. The mixer acts as the pre-amp & this is where the volume is controlled from initially. "Most" sound engineers will tell you the same thing.

So if I understand correctly ..Turn the knobs (on the amp) all the way open and control all the Volume with the mixer mains and channel contrlols. In doing this should I also keep the mains on the mixer a little Hot and the individual channels lower ? :?:

No the mains on your mixer should be lower & the channels higher - just keep them at a point that they aren't clipping

Same for my powered Eons & sub - I run 'em wide open and control it as Lonman describes on the board. Ditto for my monitor.

I have used the new G2 Eons as well, but they seemed to get a little buzzy so I backed off on them (I think it was a problem with that particular setup - not my gear).

I agree with Lon & marty.
The amps can be turned up as high as need to be until they start to clip slightly and then backed off just a slight bit. until the clip lights don't show. then you have a slight amount of headroom. In case you don't have a main compressor. Then just keep an eye on them.

Well Saturday I did as suggested which was run the amp wide open and controled all from the mixer. No problems all night until the drunken quartet of Tina Turner wanabes started screaming in the mic :evil: and the system clipped and shut down fro a split second.

Ok so now when I get the $$$ for the new mixer I'm ging to pick up a
limiter/compressor/ unit which has been on my DO BUY LIST for a long time :D

Jam,
If I may make a suggestion on the compressor.. something that has the same functions as the DBX-166xl.. but avoid Behringer & Phonic in the compressors!! You won't like them!!! They are very Noisy..
There about 8 great companies out there I'm sure that you can find atleast one you can afford.

Maybe I can help,
Try turning your amp up full all the way,then set your mains to 0 db then you can dial in each individual channel.
Bring up the volume slowly till you get the clip light to flash, then back it off a bit until it stops lighting up.You'll notice a difference right away.
This is running your system wide open and will give you the best results.

Folks, I'm going to buy stock tomorrow in several speaker manufacturers.. I think the stocks are going to rise in alot of them.. Due to the amount of replacement speakers that will be sold in the near future..

I need another Vacation... Sheesh!!!
