Post subject:  SPEAKER MAINTENANCE (PEAVEY)

I was at the local music store this weekend talking to one of the sales guys who also does repair & he said it is a good idea if you own peavey speakers to take them apart every six months to a year & clean them. especially the part around the voice coils.(where the magnet slips into the voice coil, he said dirt & grim can collect & distort the sound). I own peavey sp-5xt (about 20 years old)& they were starting to sound "muddled", so i took them apart & cleaned them & one sounds much better & the other sounds worse? could i have put it back together wrong? i am very mechanically enclined & it did not seem that hard, so could i have tightened the screws that hold the magnet on too tight? any help would greatly be appreciated.!! :)

For me, equipment maintenance - from the plug in the wall to the speakers, players, amps, wires, microphones need to be maintained. I take my speakers apart once a year (should be more) because the woofer screws tend to back out. (JBL Eon)

I cannot stress enough equipment maintenance -

Mustang,

Check if you have the phase correct.. (positive to positive - negative to negative .. and high to high and low to low) another idea is to see if maybe you didn't crush the voice coils in re-assembly..

I have done all the above before.. it's all part of the learning process.. with peavey's most of the time you won't do any immediate damage.

Just take your time doing it..

PS look at the coils carefully incase you burned one too..
