I'm thinking of purchasing either the CAVS PLATINUM HDV-201 or the CAVS DVD-202. This item will serve as a backup to my Vocopro TwisterII. Intended use is for home and occasional small parties. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each of the CAVS players? Any advice would be appreciated. I do realize that the opinions regarding CAVS players in general vary and their value is considered questionable.

You will have to be extra careful on your choice (CAVS PLATINUM OR DVD 202). One plays MP3+G and not CD+G (HDV) and the other plays CD+G but not MP3+G (DVD 202). Having said that, depending on your use and preference, you can make your choice.
I returned the DVD 202 and exchanged it for the HDV 201 because I like the benefit of having 5000+ songs on a disk (as opposed to a limited number on CD+Gs.
QUALITY-wise, the HDV is a lot better than the DVD 202 (my opinion).

the mp3+g machine plays cdgs just fine as is... you don't HAVE to rip them to hard drive...
