If your laptop has a pc card slot, I would recommend this card:

But for a Pro audio that supports asio... the Emu cards would be the best option.  Make sure to select a model that has the letter m like 1616m, the D/A converter is excellent and out perform the M-Audio card you mention.

In fact, the Emu cards with m are the best card on the market for a lower budget, even when spending 2-3 times on M-Audio, it just don't match.

My laptop sound card was getting worse all the time so I purchased a Turtle Creek Audio Advantage external sound card for $30 and my sound has never been better.

I am using a behringer U-Control 202 and love it. you can get it at musician's friend for around $29.
