They're for software piracy protection. 1980s technology. You can use the software as long as the dongle is attached to one of the computer's ports. Not a fan. If the dongle breaks, you have to wait until another is shipped to you. Also, as he's now discovering, sometimes an OS upgrade can screw you as well, because it suddenly can't see the dongle.
