Does anyone offer the service of recording a singers performance and then selling them a disk for a small fee?

I've heard of this with other KJ's, but would like to find out more.  What kind of program would be best (I run my show from a lap top), do I need any special equipment, do I need to pay ASCAP/BMI fees, what would be a good price to charge, and anything else I may have forgotten?

Any suggestions or experience out there?

We rarely if ever get a request to record. It might be a fad for awhile but would die off. I sometimes record a regular and put it on their flash drive, thanking them for their support.

One re-creation does not take a license. For more info go here

You (or more accurately your bar) needs to be paying the Ascap/BMI anyway. Regardless reselling the recording again is of questionable legality, because that involves at least a couple more layers of licensing/royalties.

Those royalties would have to be negotiated with each songwriter and also the manufacturer of the Karaoke cover. Most publishers would not bother with the few pennies of royalties you would owe (not worth the time to draw up a contract) but they could sue for unreasonable ammounts of cash.

Regardless of legality it appears to be done in a few places.

Look through previous forums as to the debate on that matter.

We use to charge 5 bucks a song years ago. We also had a gal that would take your picture singing for 3 bucks a photo..it didn't really pay to do it actually. It was just more gear to set up, and i think the young lady gave more photos away then she charged for..lol

Can you possible direct me to said previous forums on this debate?  I looked over the topics but didn't see anything regarding this topic.

Thank you all for your replies though, sounds like it might not be worth it.\

Out of curiosity what program do you use to record the singers?

I was talking many many years ago we did this. I was using karaoke players back then. I just ran a cable out of my mixer to a Philips audio recorder. Oh for the good ole days.

I record singers, this as been a real money spinner for me. I use a Zoom H4 direct inject from my mixer. I charge 10.00 euros for 3 songs and 2.50 per song therafter. I label up the disc with the name of the bar on it. I ask them to come in the night after for the disc which in turn generates more business for the bar. You can visit my website to hear the quality.

I read it, or glansed through it, still no defining answers, just opinions. I would say go for it if you wanted. The chances of an artist coming into your club, and listening to his song being recorded and given away are about nill...but now if elvis shows up, you're in trouble... :handshake:
