Here is another "Newbie" question:

Does one need a license to run a Karaoke show for pay? How about an entertainment event where you are paid and use CDG's, or MP3G's? If so where do you obtain such a license?

you may need a business license to operate in your specific city or county, but I doubt it.

You don't need a license to operate in a bar. Karaoke is covered under Ascap / BMI / Seasac, and that's the VENUE owner's responsibility to pay that fee. they're the ones ultimately profiting off the music being played.

If you were to operate a booth in a fair, then it would be up to you to get your specific temp license from ASCAP and/or BMI.

Best to go to the city municipal building info desk and get the info. A license would require a small tax on each gig but the advantages are when any member of the  BBB, town etc holds an event you have an "IN".  To me it is more about public relations than legalities.
