If you are just looking to fill the sapce up, i'd get a compressor or compressor/limiter (you will not need the gate function at all for karaoke) for the vocal mics over anything else even over the BBE to start with. But if you look again, the Alesis mixer is 3 spaces so you won't have an extra space. See if you can rear mount the power strip to free up an extra space in the front. |

then my rack is 7spaces.. after putting the power, mixer, and the bbe.. i still have 2 spaces left... one would be for effect and one more to go.... if gate/limiter/ .. or the EQ is not very necessary then i'll use the space left for 2x1/2 spaces wireless mics. thanks for your quick response.. longman |

WHAT DOES THE COMPRESSOR DO? |

A compressor would still be my first choice. The eq can be added later (outside the box) if needed. |

OK, Imagine you had a singer who would whisper words quietly and then belt out some loud screams. You find the whispers are too quiet unless you boost the fader and the screams require you to quickly lower the fader so you don't overload the mixer channel. That is the time-honored technique called "riding the gain" (gain is another word for volume). A compressor is an audio circuit that automatically rides the gain. It pumps up the volume when things get quiet and slams down the peaks when they get loud. The goal of the compressor (when set correctly) is to achieve a more uniform, more consistent audio signal that is optimum for listening. |

A compressor in the hands of someone that doesn't understand its operation is a pretty scarey thought. A compressor can do wonderful things if adjusted properly, at the same time it can do some pretty horrible things to sound if set improperly. Do your homework on this one, it isn't a bolt in the rack and let it fly device. Caution is advised. |

Also depends on the compressor itself, the cheaper ones can do more harm than say an old Symetrix 501 or dbx 160X - these are pretty harm free :D but they are also spendy little things for single channel use. |
