Ollie, Keith and anybody with a clue, I need an opinion. Which of these two chipsets would be better. I'm helping a friend pickout a basic, general purpose computer -- no real heavy, intense applications. Please don't say neither because then I'd have to start from scratch! Compaq ------- Base processor Intel® Pentium Dual Core Processor E2140 (C) 1.6 GHz 800 MHz front side bus Socket 775 Chipset: Intel 945GC Gateway ------- Intel® Pentium Dual Core Processor E2140 (1.60GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB cache non-HT) Intel® G965 Chipset |

The last DAW I put together uses a 3.2 meg dual core 800fsb 775 socket. I have everything tuned as per this The 1.6 will be adequate with the above tuning, proper and enough memory. (I did run a 1.2 for a year or 2) The other CPU I am not familiar with.. MOBO With Roxbox and sonar3 running the cpu usage runs less than 5%. On ocassion I have run several tracks in Sonar with no problems. I have read posts on HR from the experts not to use dual core but I have never had any problems. The secret to using Intels Use enough heat sink compound on the heat sink and make sure it is flat and tight on the CPU. |

That's an easy one, the 965 is the best from Intel and it fits perfectly with the Core2 Duo. I remember doing lot's or research when I build my pc and it was VERY obvious that the 965 was the best option. I use the Core2 Duo E6600 on an ASUS P5B Deluxe that uses the 965, LOVE IT!! The 975 would be a better option for gaming versus audio (multitrack audio) for the 965. I would recommend you stay away from the 945 chipset, getting old already... |

The 945 chipset cannot be upgraded much past what is already installed in the puter. The 965 will accommodate a larger range of CPU's and RAM. They basically are the same chipset with slightly better onboard sound and graphics. But onboard stuff is CPU intensive and is generally disabled, and video cards and sound cards are added. So basically the only thing the 965 has over the 945 is the fact that it will accept CPU's with a 1066 bus and a little more faster RAM. But if you will not be upgrading it at all ...it's moot... The way those 2 boxes are put together now, there is no advantage one over the other. I would get the cheapest one if you aren't going to spend another 500 bucks or so upgrading. Micky is correct though...about which one was better the 965 being the newer chipset. I always upgrade to the max sooner or later so I wouldn't buy the 945 myself.. |
