Dropped in a show last night in my small town and the guy is literally talking, over the mic (but to an almost empty room by midnight) about his gastric bypass surgery, showing us his belly, telling us his tummy has a zipper so if he gets kicked in the a@@ hard enough, he'll be able to open the zipper and stick his head out.  Then goes on to tell us about his horrible divorce - then blabs loudly, "she was a Filipino Lesbian."  I'm not sure of the entertainment value of each of those topics but I wasn't impressed; neither, apparently, was the owner. When we met today, I briefly discussed inappropriateness on the mic and included those examples. He was quite aghast that this had occurred in his own place.

When I take up a Christmas disc to song off of, because it has great instrumentation, I notice he uses computer; tells me he has over 90,000 songs...(red flag)...I say you must be very wealthy to have spent what must be close to $90,000 on songs. He says, "Oh yes, I'm very smart and very wealthy. And try $250,000." He then goes on to tell me, as if trying to bowl me over, that he has been in the biz since '88; that at the peak of his career he had 4 systems, 14 shows a week.  And for some reason he insists on telling me he has been a singer in a band, and played in bands for years.  I say, "Oh, what a coincidence, me too."  I cannot believe he has said so much to someone he doesn't even know within 2 minutes...and all in the name of trying to impress, I guess.

Then he makes a big deal out of telling me that he hates it when people bring in
"$1.99 CDGs from K-Mart." (It is a House Party Christmas Hits CDG).   Wow, he's just really impressing me now. I tell him it's my favorite Christmas disc... Oh, and "And I'll just have to reset my computer after I use it..." As if that is a HUGE thing to do (besides which, I'm thinking that isn't my problem.)  Then when it finally starts, there is no volume. "Oops, I had it muted."

I ask if he has an artist book that doesn't have pages 151-185 missing. He says, "better to just give me the name of the song. Last time I did that book was 3 years ago." Can't tell me whether he has songs when I ask him - he has to look it up.

PS: I am doing a special New Year's Eve show at this place as the owner wants to see how I do my show. I know he has an ulterior motive as I will be doing a lot of the marketing, and I think he wants to see if I am true to my statement about doing extensive marketing of my shows.  I just hope that when people see the name of the place they don't think it is Mr. Belly Zipper, or the two preceding KJs, who obviously were asked to leave because of the lack of quality of their shows. Will just have to be very clear, I guess, about that.

I know a KJ that if they can't find the next singer, announce very loudly over the microphone, "OH i can't find Michelle, she must be pooping."

Now that's quality entertainment. LMAO  Hey do you do kids birthday parties?

Hmmm

Even if the guy did spend 90k or 250k on songs i doubt it.

To rip 90,000 songs into a computer will take about 1000 hours or more.

No one has that much dedication AND at the same time lacks the dedication to update a song book in 3 years time.

Pages dont "disappear" like that. He made a bad book at the start.

The two traits are just in massive conflict. I think you have a song pirate who spent $250 not 250k on a hard drive.

Even someone who spent the time to illegally download that many songs should have spent the time to make a decent book. (or if he is so rich paid someone to do it).

He doesn't have time to update a book, too busy ripping songs.

I'm sure after tomorrow night, he'll be a REAL jerk when I replace him on Friday nights...argggg.....

Even with such short notice to do a New Year's Eve show 'cold' in there, apparently I have a large enough following that the main room is already reserved, and they are starting on the back room.

K

Well, now, that would be a KJ who would find himself out of a job if he ever did that to ME. Because, well, he'd be DEAD by morning. How rude;)

It's part of his regular routine.  Someone is always pooping...

I think it's about the most unprofessional thing i can remember hearing about.

It has to be real embarrassing to the person he's talking about.
