Hi, I could have posted this as a reply to "definition of Karaoke" but thought it be better standing alone.
Karaoke in public, or for friends, etc. encourages people to "have a go" in itself, perhaps, not a bad thing, but there are other points.  I have heard voices on Showcase that would not have a commercial airing, some have impressed me for all sorts of reasons.  Some have been wonderfully "lived in" I've heard people's kids, or friends join in, learnt about technique (vocal and recording)
I could go on for ages about this site.
But looking at a broader picture, folk songs were handed down by people who cared about the content (some of them probably had voices like corncrakes) so some great songs would have been denied to us if they were only allowed to be sung by "professional" singers.
In a similar vein, before cameras were portable, travellers made sketches and watercolour paintings to bring home, some are lacking in draughtsmanship, but many have an untutored, naive, beauty.

And I have to say it, some of the subs I have listened to on Showcase have a very real beauty.

Time to climb down from the soapbox!  Be lucky, Ian
