This Christmas my family has decided to play a gift swapping game with the adults instead of us all exchanging gifts. They have placed a $50 limit on the present. It is sort of a high amount, but that is because we'd be spending a lot more money if we all bought for each other.
This is harder than it seems. It is much easier buying a present for one person. You just but what you'd think they'd like. I have to buy a present for $50 that would appeal to all people involved. Aaaarg !
Any ideas?

call me dumb...you have to buy one present that is likely to appeal to everyone? Do the gifts go into a collective pool?

These are the basic rules -
Initially, all of the wrapped gifts are placed onto a gift pile. The gifts are not labeled whom they are from, nor do they list a recipient.
Everyone chooses a number from a bowl, this determines the order of gift choosing.
The first person chooses a gift from the gift pile, opens the gift for all to see, and keeps it for the time being. Person #2 can either choose to take an unopened gift from the gift pile or steal a gift from any previous gift-opener. If an unopened gift is selected, the gift must be unwrapped. If at any time a person's gift is stolen, that person can immediately unwrap a new gift or steal another person's gift. This process repeats until a gift reaches "dead" status (see below) or until a person chooses to unwrap a new gift (as opposed to stealing a gift), at which point play proceeds to the next person. After all turns have been taken, the person who went first has the option of taking one more turn since this person had the disadvantage of not knowing what any of the now-opened presents were at the beginning of play.
Owners of opened gifts must keep them visible for all to see and hold them up when requested.

Babs, my family has done that for years at our big family gathering. We all buy for all the kids, but we adults just bring a male or female gift and do the white elephant thing.
It IS tough.... I have my mom, 4 sisters, a step sister, a sister in law, and 5 nieces who are of the age to be in the exchange... and trying to find something that would suit ANY of them is a joke.
One of my sisters one year made a kind of "basket" into which she put a bag of Starbucks coffee beans, a bottle of Kahlua, a couple of new romance novels, some pampering things like foot soaks and face masks (yanno, the moisturizing kind, not the skeery kind) and some nice aromatherapy candles. I'm the one who got it, it was a nice gift for ME.... but it was a good thing my mom didn't get that one, cause she wouldn't have used hardly any of it. (she has never touched alcohol, doesn't read romance novels, and doesn't drink flavored coffee)
Another year, my mom made 2 puzzles, really neat western themed ones... then set them with sealant and put them in handmade barnwood frames. (hard to explain but they're very cool- if you like southern/southwest art deco)... anyhow, I got them, and I love them, they are the main focus in my living room. Two of my sisters... would never have hung them up.
So, yeah, no matter WHAT kind of ideas you come up with, you'll be lucky if they suit for everyone. Unless of course you buy a gift certificate. LMAO But, imo, that's tacky and impersonal.
Good luck, I know I was of absolutely no help... just wanted to jabber jaw back at ya:)

Babs... that's exactly how we do it. Except, the person who's number is up would go choose an unopened gift, then if they wanted someone else's.. they hand the unopened gift to that person and take theirs.
One year, one of my sisters buoght a really nice Montana Silver belt buckle... which she knew I would fall in love with.
Her number was after mine, so she picked her gift she had brought and came and changed with me. I was like "well, you little bi---" until I understood she wanted me to have the belt buckle.

Charmin - You were actually a lot of help. Maybe I shouldn't be so concerned about pleasing everyone. I really would just like to get a gift that people would fight over. LMAO I've played this game once before and it was so much fun watching people try to steal back their favorite item.
