My regular venue has a beer garden seperate from the bar. You have to walk outside to get to it. It is enclosed and has a heater. Is ia actually very nice.

My problem begins with the bar owner asking me to announce that the beer garden is open and it is not as crowded as inside. Everyone is inside for karaoke. I feel silly telling people to go outside. He mainly wants me to do this because no one is out there. I'm trying to think of a nice way to make this announcement without sounding like I want people to leave.  LMAO Aaaarg! Silly bar owners.

Flipper came up with the great idea of using some sort of speaker to let people know outside when they are up next. (which I'm working on) The only problem is they can't bring their drinks with them from one bar to the next. So usually if people go outside they stay there because it is a pain in the butt.

sounds like the beer garden is just a bad idea. its hard enough to get people to go to a back room much less a totaly seperate bar

I was doing a gig on Saturday night.  Rockin' party ... A friend of mine came up to me and said 'There's no one at the bar down the street and the bartender sent me over to see if I could steal some people away because there's no one there'.  I told her it was my job to keep people where I was, but I did make an announcement.

I said ... "Hey everybody, I've just been told there's noone at the XXXX, so if you're not having a good time, please make your way over there.  Sounds like the bartender is lonely ... Now MAKE SOME NOOOOOISE."

The place went nuts.  I thought it was funny.  Maybe you could say something similar to get people to not go out to the beer garden.

give your cordless mic to the owner and have HIM make the announcement... see the bartender for details...

I agree though that it's a pretty bad idea since you can't carry drinks from one to the other area!

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, geeeeze..nothing like cutting your own throat!  Once the new speakers get up and you can communicate with the people out there...then hey, maybe it's a go....but still!  MrD

I'm thinking I'll be killing 2 birds with one stone with being able to announce outside. When the smoking law goes into effect people will probably flock to the beer garden to smoke.

Hey Bab's go to your local Rat Shack or Pro Audio store and they can help you come up with an idea for how to get the sound out there. Betcha the bar owner will pay for it!

I would be willing to bet that he will do anything to keep the smokers happy once it goes non smoking.

Good luck

Washington State has been a smoke-free bar state for a while now - makes it absolutely wonderful for me, being a nonsmoker, but that does create its own pain in the crack for the karaoke host...who then has to wonder if a person has left, if they're in the bathroom, if they're out smoking, or WHERE??? Good idea, the speaker to smoking area. I went to sing in a small place that had created a HUGE smoking area in the back of their place and you'd swear the place was almost empty until you opened the door to the smoking area (which I affectionally refer to as the "Butt Hutt").

Come January, we'll all be there Babs!  I would consider running a small audio out to the garden and a video line to one screen.

I heard a rumor that bars may possibly be able to by a tobacco license at some point.  Of course, that would mean another price increase to the consumer.  There is a lot of pressure coming from the casinos, so we'll see if it sticks.

Washington State is full of tribal casinos  and they still allow smoking indoors (sovereign nations)...tad unfair to the rest of the bars and restaurants...but after having been in non-smoking places for so long now, even smokers say the smoke in the tribal casinos is annoying. Whooda thunk it.

I still work in a smoking environment (tribal bar) & have heard that some have quit coming because of it, although we've gained in other areas because of it.

Hi marty

Keep in touch - I'd like to know how things go for you and 8 ball when the smoking law hits. Everyone keeps telling me it will be fine. I'm afraid for us smaller bars. I've been told if we last through the first 6 months we'll be fine because business will pick up again. Fingers crossed for all of us!

If you have a busy bar to begin with, yes you'll lose some business, but as you say it will gain back after about a year.
The small clubs that will go under will blame it on smoking but in reality probably weren't doing so well to begin with & they blamed no smoking for their decline.

We do wirless speakers for a few places. One of the bars I used to work has a big outdoor deck. I charged the bar $25 extra a night for providing music outside.

I use a powered Mackie SRM-450 a Sennheiser wireless G2 body pack system.

The reciever for the microphone goes with the speaker and the body pack will go on an additional out on your mixer.

A nice effective inexpensive soultion about $1200.
