You are going the wrong direction using you stereo for your karoake.  Possibility heightens you could blow your speakers because they aren't designed for live vocals & you probably don't really want to take that chance.  Would recommend getting a small PA or all in one karaoke machine that you can dedicate for singing.  Although in may run a little higher than your planned budget of $300.
The TV display can still be used.
For home use, this will probably fit the bill for you.

Also right now gives you 2 30 song packs of your choice (from the list) & a 5 song custom disc plus half off shipping.

I agree with Lonman on this.  Your home theater system will be toast in the first hour of heavy use.  Besides which, it's not designed to reproduce the mids you get in live vocals.

For 'home' use only.  Never for a pro show.

Their are several compact Karaoke systems available around your set budget $300-$400 range. try ACE Karaoke link, you can start off small and add a better sound system when needed.

* (remember to take it easy on the small surround speakers as they are probably not designed to take louder volumes or prolonged use).

If you and your family really enjoy Karaoke I suggest you up the budget and go with a small PA good Mics and separate player.  I started with a inexpensive player and when I replaced it I spent enough to have some really great sound.  It was a lot for our income and worth every penny. I would not go in debt for it though if 300 is all you can spend then shop it for the best you can afford.  Have fun.

I'm with the pros here!  I'm a victim of running karaoke through my surround system.   I didn't like it from day one.  It was hard to hear a clear sound, like something was missing, especially with oldies, where you want a little reverb on the lead mic.  The volume seemed restricted and then a speaker went!
The karaoke player is now my DVD player, and I bought a Vocopro Gigmaster that I can wheel around and it's great for yard parites.  I paid $505 - free shipping.  Now I'm going tech, and adding a laptop and flat screen monitor.
