Hi, everybody! My name's Emily, and I'm a new KJ. I just started last weekend at a local bar here in Eastern Washington, and I could sure use some pointers! See, I've never done this before. The KJ at one of the more popular bars recruited me straight off the stage. She asked me to work for her, because I can sing well, and I'm very open and friendly. Plus, I know how to work a PC and stay sober. ;) I have some questions. First, how do I stay energetic and lively? The bar owner told my boss that I'm "not spunky enough," and I need to step it up. Well, it was my first night, and I was nervous, but I'm still open to criticism. Second, what kind of music should I play between rotations? The patrons seem to like R&B and Hip-Hop the most, but I like a little variety. Also, there's no dance floor. Should I keep the music up-tempo anyway? Third, what should I do when I'm waiting around for some time, and there's only one singer? How about when there are no singers? How do I keep things moving? Should I sing in a rotation when there are so few singers? What kind of songs should I sing? Also, should I stay at the podium or mingle once in a while? I know that's a lot of questions, but I appreciate any advice from the folks who know! |

Hi Emily, Welcome to KS. It is best that you ask your questions either in the Tech forum or the Open forum. Most of the KJ read those forum. |

Welcome to the site :wave: My head is spinning from wanting to answer all your questions. You will get great advice with all of your questions if you do what Jian said. Post your questions one at a time in the "Discussuion Forum". Make sure you let them know you are new to the whole process. We all will be happy to help. Oh - keep in mind everyone's shows are run differently for there kind of venue. Some stuff will work and other stuff just won't fit your particular enviroment. It is a learning process to figure out what will work best for you. Good Luck ! I'm excited for you. :hug: Babs I'll answer the spunky question now though. I am right next to the singers when they sing, so if you think they wouldn't mind interact with them. Keep a smile on your face as much as posible and move to the music. Now I don't mean use them as a stripper pole. LMAO If the crowd sees you dancing, singing along (not to loud to distract the singer) and having fun, they will too. When there is a long music break when they are singing talk to them to make them feel more comfortable. If it is a sing a long song like Sweet Caroline take your mic out to the crowd and have them sing in the mic. a lot of it will come natural after time. |
