Post subject: | What Key is best for you to sing in? |
My son who is a better musician than I am came for a short visit this week. He made the comment that my best songs seem to be in the key of F. So we started looking at it and almost all of my songs I do well fell into the key of D, E, F or G. With a lot of my favorite best songs in the key of F. I had to go to work so he said we could look at it some more some other time. I am not sure how it helps to know about this. Any comments? Jim-N-TN |

No. If I like a song, I'll butcher it anyway. Either by transposing it, or singing it in an uncomfortable register. I only sing for myself.. But as a musician I transpose all to around my comfort range accompanying myself |

I have a music back ground and I have no clue. LMAO I never pay attention to what key somethings in. I guess I should. I usually know before I sing something if it's in my range or not from hearing it on the radio and if it isn't I'll knock it down a key or sing it an octive above. There is always a way around an uncomfortable key. |

Jian, I read the thread about using Key Changer. I have been using in order to sing several songs that are clearly beyond my range. I think I will try using it more. I never have to go up in keys just down. Thanks, Jim-N-TN (singing happily in the key of F) |

Yeah, I must agree...."F" seems to pop up for my songs than any other. I also see "D" once in a while. I however, don't pay attention. If I like the song, I try it! MrD's Entertainment (For all your Musical Needs) MrD - Owner, KJ/DJ Specialist Visit MrD @ Myspace - www.myspace/larrynance |

I sing best in E.some songs work well in F for me I never learned to read notes or any of that. I can play a bit of bass, and was a drummer in school. My sister likes to come to my shows and can tell me if i nead to bump a song up or down, but my ears just can not tell unless its way off. I say its a blessing ![]() |

The key has to be in my range, form there it depend on the song. I find that's the problem with a lot of karaoke singers, great voices - wrong key. Jackson |

Bb to E is my usual range of good keys. If it is in F I almost always shift it down one or two half-steps. G and A are problematic, and whether I try them (be it shift up one or down 3) depends on the song and where most of it's notes lie. I can hit a lot of notes that don't sound good when I stay there.... |

I think the only way to answer this question depends on what song you are singing and the tessitura of the music. I'm not that familiar with music theory, but it seems to me that the vocal range of most Pop songs stays within about 1 octave. I've also discovered that a lot of Pop songs are wirtten in key of E (guitar players tell me this is one of the easiest keys to play in- although being an oboe player, I would vehemently disagree). Enough digression- For what its worth, the songs that I think work the best for me happen to be in the keys of G, A, B-flat, E-flat minor, and F-minor; this is not to say these are my best keys, but simply that these songs, the way that they were written, worked best for my voice. |
