I have 2 of the cutest squirrels that have decided to live in my tree in the back yard. I put out some food for them. Now I'm wondering if it is a bad idea to encourage them to stay. My dad always said they were just rats with tails. Do I need to worry about them being destructive? |

If you like animals, go ahead and feed them; but if you don't like them there is no need to do it. which ever cause of action you take will not hurt them. If you do feed them you have a 'friend'. I keep 3 dogs and I hate cats because they can't bark. |

well, your dad is right... the squirrels are basically rats with long bushy tails. I think they're wonderful, but they CAN become a problem... the ones in my old house ... the backyard was FULL of acorn shells! literally... no grass would grow and you'd mow the yard, and send out chopped acorn shells! ![]() http://www.birdfeedersonly.com/squirrel-feeders I like the glass jar type... but I'm intrigued with the corn feeders. You can get some great deals on peanuts from the discount stores... like five pounds for a dollar or so. Salted or unsalted, doesn't matter... they love 'em! |

Go for it Babs. They are cool to watch and it's fun to come up with challenging obsticals for them overcome to get to their feed....Get a bulk bag of black sunflower seeds for them. It's like candy to them and winter birds, but it's really good for them. I buy at least one 50 LB sac of black sunflower seeds each month and so does my mom next door.....If you feed the "Rats" you will also attract birds....About the only mess you will have to worry about is bird droppings and seed hulls but it's all worth it.....Start tossing your table scraps out in the back yard and you will also attract coons....Next spring put up a hummingbird feeder too. My house backs up to deep woods and we have tons of them critters. They do no damage but provide tons o free entertainment. I'm starting to like you. ![]() |

babs all you really have to worry about is if you start haring noises in your attic starting ant daybreak and dusk. squirrels are great fun to watch, but once they get into your house they are very destructive. they can chew wires and tear up insulation making nests. i woudln't worry about it much, though. if you want to make sure your house is rodent proof, private message me and i'll give you info on what to look for and how to seal your house so the critters can't get in. |

I had a bad experience with squirrels as a kid. I broke a window, and I was under the back porch, hiding from my dad, toting his belt with the buckle that resembled a meat hook. Anyway, two squirrels ran up my pants leg. I tried to remain quiet, but when I heard one say to the other "let's eat one here, and take the other one with us"......I danced my way out from under the porch, and right into Dad's left arm....he looked real surprised as I shook out, what had to have looked like two furry turds from my pant leg....... ![]() |

Really doesn't take much to attract squirrels. All it takes is a bird feed and seed... I just wouldn't have anything too close to your home because if they can get into your attack, they will... assuming the can't, they STILL will !! They are amazingly crafty rodents, and they will figure out how to do close to the impossible to get what they want. What scares me a little around here is that wildlife has lost it's fear of people, because people let them be, not many kids to scare them... So I'll be walking past a tree, and I'll literally be face to face with a squirrel ready to jump to another tree, and I'd make a perfect island for it to land on in the process.... Have you ever seen their teeth ? Now they aren't carriers of Rabies, but they DO carry distemper... We also have A LOT of bats around here...and I've had a few almost get tangled in my hair when it was longer... THAT is scary... because they bite and carry rabies.. Fortuneately I don't have problems with skunks.. I have really bad personal hygiene, so the skunks don't come near me ! |

The tree is in the middle of the yard. I have an acre lot behind the house, so it isn't like it's right up against the house or anything. Oh they are so cute. I put the food on my deck today. My cats came unglued watching them through the door. The squirrels seemed to be relentlessly taunting them, playing and rolling around. I'm hooked - I even named the Kappy and Johnny. ![]() |

If she saw the teeth on those things she'd have reconsidered hand feeding Matt LOL We have LOADS of Beaver here.. I have progressive stages of them building a dam behind my condo.. Few that have never seen them know just how large they are. Beaver carved out NH and Vermont... Pretty busy critters |
