Spot light effect, you could use a couple of chauvet 2.0 intimidators ( 11 colors plus white and 14 gobos plus open 5 channels)  with a controller, that way you could control the color and the pattern. You wouldn't be limited to the "Spot light" effect as they have several gobo's. You could also pre program a few effects that you like to make using them during the show pretty simple, plus you could get tricky and use the joy stick in real time if you wanted to to follow the singer around. They would be placed as high as possible and in front of the singer for the use you have in mind. I have a total of  seven of these which I use from time to time ( I do live sound and lighting company) so don't be thinking I'm using seven of these for Karaoke Unfortunately if your budget is 500, you'd have to be thinking used as they are around 260.00 each plus you'd need a controller. There are a few things out there, but if you want to be able to use them for a spot light, thats what comes to mind for me.

I should ad that I mention the Chauvet over the American DJ because thats what I have experience with. I can say they are well built and have given me absolutely no problems. The colors are vivid and with adjustable focal point you get well defined gobos.

If you are doing a show where there is no smoking you might want to look into some haze (not fog) so you can see the light beams.  If you don't the only place you'll see the light is where it hits a wall or the floor.  You ever notice when a store does a demo on a fixture they haze the room to make it more dramatic.  Give it a shot.  Or if you work in one of those places that you have to burn your clothes every time you go home because of the smoke you might not need to worry about it.

Also flashing, spinning & blinking lights are often distracting to the singer if they are aimed at them, they should be aimed at the dance floor only.  The par cans you have (in the closet) would be aimed at the singer just to brighten/liven up the staging/singing area set with a nice 'scene' of reds, blues & maybe an amber.

As these are the statements and or questions posed by the individual I will stand by my previous recommendation as they meet the needs of the individual, "Multiple Colors", "Spotlight" and can be "Busy". I will ad, the point Lonman has brought up is valid and very true with some people. Thats one of the reasons for my suggestion. If mounted and programed properly they are very versatile. The X and Y axis are fully programable which would mean they could be set to act as a spot light if needed, or by changing the X and Y axis they could be set to point straight down or any angle you desire to go crazy on the dance floor just by changing a scene (push of a button). I personally use them behind or to the side, but I have pinspots and par cans in front already so I don't need that aspect of them. I have also used a pair over a dance floor and they work very well. I would say that 85% of my lighting is either to the rear or to the sides of the performer, more of a visual effect for the audience. They are 250 Watt so they will be plenty bright enough for your intended purpose unless you are doing Karaoke at the Fillmore.

It seems like you have 2 distinct goals

1) Light the Dance Floor
2) Ambience for the Singer/Stage

I don't see were 1 or 2 lights can do both ?

I've got it in my lighting budget this year. I saw a demo at Guitar Center the other day and it is very impressive for the price. It weighs only 12lbs.

 My buddy has one of those. he says it is a whole light show in a 12 inch square box.  DO NOT leave them in the sun. it shines through the lens and melts the leds.

Im useing lights at a KJ show for the first time tomorow night. I used to mount a couple of small par 38 lights on top of my speakers and point them at the stage area. I nead to switch to spot bulbs as the floods have a wider coverage. they lived up to there name. when I use them as a chase they do work well. I have a stand with a 4 foor bar. it has 2 small strobes, 2 beacon lights, and 4 par 38s on a chase.  I plan to run them up as high as I can and point the pars at the dance floor and singers area. the strobes will be pointed at the dance floor. I dont expect to have the bar all that dark so my lights will not be really overpowering, but they will add effect.
