Recently I started playing some dance music to close my shows. It's gone over quite well. I boom the joint. I filled in for a neighboring KJ a couple of weekends ago and boomed his joint. Since then there's been a steady buzz in town (small town) about wanting it more and more, to the point that the owner where I do my gigs has asked me to do a three hour set on Sundays (an odd but busy night in town). There's a restaurant owner in town who's talking about renting out one of the vacant halls and doing DJ/Dance three nights a week and bands on two others.
I know there's a lot of talk about DJ/Dance music in combination with Karaoke and the hardcore KJs despise it, but for a small town like I work in, it's kind of produced a 'Footloose' revolution. Just thought I'd share.

I think a venue playing dance/DJ music is cool..... as long as it's kept seperate from "karaoke time". Lots of people like to dance, and just sit and WAIT for a good karaoke song to come on that they can dance to. When people get drunk- they ALL want to dance. (even my husband for crise sake... Bubba can dance after a 12 pack)
I just don't think it goes over too well (most places) when people are there expecting- and waiting- to "sing". But a time set aside especially for that? I would think it would go over great. Even if you advertised it that way, like "karaoke 8- 12, dance music 12-2" (or whatever times) ... then they'd be expecting it, and I'm sure the whole crowd would hang around.
CroakDog... where abouts in the PacNW are you? Just curious, as I am just south of PDX.

Ah....... I've been there, but it's been a while. When I was first married, I lived in Olympia. And I used to go camping at Morton and Packwood areas.
Nice area though- it's very green and pretty up there.

I had a gig for a couple of years at a non-tribal casino (no smoking or slots) and twice a night I did a "booty call" - put on something like Humpty Dance or Honky Tonk Badonkadonk, and all the women got up and danced for a chance at a $10 prize and a crown they wore for the rest of the night. I always asked someone who didn't appear to be very involved (nonsinger) if they'd like to judge the booty call. People would literally come running over from the card room to watch the booty call. Especially the single guys!.... It was a nice break - I called it the 7th inning stretch...everybody knew they had a few minutes to go outside and smoke, or go to the restroom, etc.

variety is the spice of life
I have experianced late in the night at my Saturday show --After the Alcohol has kicked in and after 3 hours of the same ole Karaoke Songs ( usually slower type ballads) The place LOVES some dance music where the GIRLS can shake their booty's ( no offense meant ) . NO matter what I usually have a 20min dance set or similiar party type music at the OT part of my show while I'm collecting some books and wrapping up the mics etc etc.
