Post subject:  Song List

Dr Fred posted his song list for his first night so out of curiuosity I went into history (about 10 shows on this comp) and deleted everything except the songs.

The ones listed more than once reflect that more than one singer sang it. Most were sang multiple times by regulars. To give you an idea what they sing out here

I see a quite different selection of music genres from my show.

I think that may be one future direction of successful karaoke is to target your music more for a specific music taste, and attract people who like that kind of music. That brings in the people that like that music and enjoy to similar music being sung.

In my town with 3 other bars having karaoke on the same night within 2 miles, I don't think I could survive on being just "karaoke".

The previous KJ at my club advertised as indie rock karaoke, I may be more towards "New Wave" karaoke (but some indie rock). I think the song choices of my first week reflects a specific music "taste".

If you are the only Karaoke in the area, then a generalist approach may serve best but in an area with competition, specializing to a music genre could be the ticket.

I try to have a lot of the standards as well, but the bar regulars certainly favors a music type.  I had one group of non regulars, that came in very late and drunk, and loudly demanded some country songs that I didn't have. Now I have a bit (but not a lot) of country music, they found a Dixie Chicks song, sang it poorly and drove off a few regulars with their bad behavior, not just the singing but being obnoxious and drunk. Now I think a few of the regulars at the bar could have sung a Dixie Chicks (or other country) song at my bar, but when an outsider comes in and sings "other types" of music poorly and obnoxiously it is bad for the regulars. Not to say country songs are bad, or that I don't like country (or other specific subsets of music), just that Karaoke may work best with a group of people with similar music tastes. It would be just as bad to go into a country music karaoke bar and sing some Smiths or Sex Pistols.

My list would be closer to doc except with alot more heavy rock/alternative.  Many on kary list I haven't ever heard done.
Which brings back to the other subject on must have discs/songs - they don't exist, they may be must have for your shows, what is hot in one place may be a flop in another.
