While I am not a lawyer apparently this seems to make a good argument in favor of "fair use" copying of Karaoke Cds.

This implies backup disks and computer karaoke is legal.

I am sure at some time in the future it will be legally debated and settled in a court case.

But in any case it seems that for those of us that have bought the disks, and either made backups or transferred them to a computer have a legal leg to stand on.

(but not those that made copies to distribute to their closest 10,000 anonymous friends on the internet).

Of course the Manus will be on the other side of the debate and, for right now they may want us to buy a replacement copies of their cds, and when asked will claim that personal backups and computer karaoke are ALL illegal. Those of us who have read comments from the Manus spokesmen may be getting a biased opinion of the legality (although clearly it has not been decided yet).

I guess we can rest easy knowing that there are apparently reasoned legal opinions that our actions are legal (so long as we own one legal copy for personal use).

Personally I am keeping a second backup of the songs I ripped on a second hard drive anyway. Even though I own the CDs the time it took to rip them is just too much to repeat. I had a friend who had his hard-drive stolen, not that unexpected an outcome if it is regularly being moved around and sometimes left in a vehicle after a late night show.
