How do you handle tips at your show? |

Thank anyone that puts one in the jar - however if they ask for a 'favor' ie bumping them up, i'll take it out & give it back to them. Take them out of the jar at the end of the night & put them in my pocket. |

I am always ragged on for not having a tip jar out - I guess because I've been to shows where there is a very prominently placed tip jar and the absolute LAST thing I would consider doing is tipping the host/hostess (for such poor/marginal quality shows). If someone comes up to me offering me $50 as a tip with the stipulation that they "sing next" I direct them to the next person who is up to sing - suggest that they may want to consider offering that person the money to take their place. Funny what happens when you do that. I've had people actually pay for the right to sing next - not pay me but pay the next singer - good situation for everyone! I have several clients who always walk up to me before they leave and tuck the money in my hand - I'm always very appreciative of it - doesn't hurt to supplement what has happened to what we earn in this area for doing a helluva good job. |

most of my regulars know i don't accept tips, but whenever someone offers to tip me i very honestly tell them "i'm flattered that you feel i've done a good enough job to deserve a tip, but i'd prefer you use the money to take care of the barstaff and wait staff". the way i see it, the more they spend in the bar, the happier the bar and staff are. besides, the venues i'm in pay pretty well. i also let them know that tipping won't get them bumped up in the rotation. |

I keep one on the side of the stage. I think it is tacky to ask for tips. If people think I'm doing a good job I figure they will show their appreciation. I don't believe in taking bribes to bump a person up in rotation. It will make more headaches than it's worth. I'm not a perfect angel though a $50 or $100 tip may sway me. It has only happened maybe once or twice and believe me the regulars understand that one. When you are a single mom with 2 kids in college and bills to pay it's hard to turn down. |

I used to get ragged on for not having a tip jar out, and then I'd put one out, and never get a dollar... mostly cause in the area I was working in, tips meant bribes! |
