It must be that time of year because I'm seeing spiders every where. I'm sitting here typing at my key board while a house spider makes his way up, down and all around the wall by me.
We get those big wolf spiders in the house too. I had to kill a monster yesterday. I wish they'd all go away already. Any of you having the same sightings?

Thanks Babs. I nearly pee'd my pants when I saw that pic.
Now I'm gonna be peeking under my keyboard all day, and flinching every time something tickles my arm or neck;)
ewww... but I hate spiders.
Ane yep... same here. I just killed a whopper that was IN my folded clean laundry... I grabbed a pair of jeans, and there he sat.. waiting to gnaw on me. They're all over right now.
Creepy little (@$%!) ers.

Spiders are my indian protectors. I have never killed one I will take them outside and turn them loose...
I was on shore duty at WSMR and had security watches out in the missle compound at night. We had to enter each building every hour All were under dble lock and had a small foyer and when you opened the door the light would come on sometimes about 3 tarantulas would jump up eye level in your face First time you bout have a heart attack. The real worry though was rattlers and scorpions.

Yikes! Better you than me. I would have certainly died of fright.
The one I killed the other day had bitten my daughter in her bed. She was so frightened she was frozen still while she watched it climb over her legs. It took all my menatl strength to actually kill it. If it hadn't of bitten her I'm not sure I would have got up the nerve to kill it. I'm deathly afraid of them. I would rather have a snake in my bed than a spider.

The bite was caused by fear Bees wasps and many other insects respond to fear which they can sense... I have never been bitten by any of them I was skirting a trailer one time and there were mud wasps flying around and I wasnt paying any attention to them A guy walked up with his shirt off and about a dozen off them nailed him. I had to spray them so he could help me...
With the West Nile out here Im more concerned more with skeeter bites.

How bad is West Niles by you? We have a few cases every year here, but I've never known anyone who has gotten it. My doctor told me more people probably have had it than known because unless you are specifically tested for it you don't know if you've had it or not. It isn't always fatal.

EDIT: 30 horses 7 people

The animal that cuses more deaths in Africa more than the rest combined is the mosquito and malaria..

Ok, here is your definitive answer on spiders.
The spider Babs pictured is a Wolf Spider although I didn't realize they were that far north. All spiders produce venom. That is how they kill their prey, however most spiders lack the mouth parts to bite a human. Wolf spiders do have the capability to bite humans, but they lack the desire. More than likely the spider Babs saw was running from her rather than turning to face it's attacker. Incidentally, most "Brown Recluse" bites diagnosed are actually staph infections. They both look the same, but the symptoms are much different. (don't really feel like getting into that at the moment)
Because spiders aren't insects, they don't react to insecticides in the same manner that other bugs do. Most insects have antennae that they use to feel or "see" their way around. just like you must keep your glasses clean, bugs must keep their "glasses" clean however they don't have tissues handy, so they clean them with their mouth. As the bugs crawl through whatever residual insecticide they pick up traces of residue on their antannae and legs. When they groom they ingest this insecticide which inturn kills them. Spiders will succumb to this insecticide through absorption if they come in contact with it while it is wet. They can also be affected by insecticides if they eat a bug that has been in contact with an insecticide, but most spiders are predatory and will not eat a dead bug. The best method to get rid of spiders (or at least keep them at a minumum) is to keep their food supply to a minimum. Also, continually sweeping their webs down will deter them.
There you have it....everything you always wanted to know about bugs...and prolly a while lot more!
by the way, I am a licensed pest control operator and have the highest certification in the state of Texas. I finished classes at Purdue university and own my own pest control company.

We actually have Brown Recluse, some people call they violin spiders, around here. They are spiders that can't bite you, like the ones you refered to, but people actually press they're venom into themselves.....I've seen the results.....not pretty...... .....I kill spiders every chance I get.....I hate the F@#k out of them all.....I buy arachnicide.....works on those tuff little clover mites too....

Quote: They are spiders that can't bite you Wrong, They can and DO bite.. The "fiddler" or recluse spiders although only the size of a dime often hide in sleeping bags, shoes, and DO bite but often between the toes and fingers, they'll bite ANYPLACE tho.. They are VERY dangerous. Where the heck did you EVERN hear they don't bite ? That's just wrong. They are all over N America and love standard household conditions. People SHOULD know about these spiders and watch out for them. Quote: I nearly lost my leg from that *&^%$#@!!!!!!
Recluse spiders are all that scare me in terms of spiders. I have no fear of black widows and tarantulas. Scorpions however would scare the (#$ out've me. Those little things also are known "hitchhikers"... getting into produce crates..
We have loads of wolf spiders up around here. I usually escort a big one outside on the average of one every two years. I have little fear of spiders. In fact this morning I looked over towards the nightstand by the bed and noticed a daddy longlegs had spun a web... Only thing that really bugged me was the damn chirping of the cricket that got into my bedroom thru the AC vents and was under my bed between a few guitar cases.. I sort've like critters.. They have a right to live too, and I'd rather the daddy longlegs than the damn male anopheles mosquitos that DO get far too personal for my liking.
Snakes scare the xit out've me.. Still, they have rights too... I go out've my way to NOT walk where they like to sun themselves.. Of course if one got into my condo, I'd be out've here in a heartbeat, until someone walked out've my condo with the snake.. I'd be sleeping, eating, and typing outdoors..
I got a spider scare three years back however. Feared it was a Brown Recluse. Small thing fell from an entry-way and I got a painful bite between two fingers... Couldn't see the spider tho since it was fast and quite small.. Fortuneately it was likely not a recluse spider since I'd have certainly needed medical attention had it been. Do the very young spiders of that species bite and produce an amount of venom that wouldn't be as dangerous ? Not sure.. Most spiders can bite, this tiny bugger HURT when it bit.. First spider bite that I recall.
Not sure, but I might've somehow not taken necessary precautions. btw, this is a shot from my cam last year.. I think we should coexist with nature.. Live and let live
(btw, still couldn't "get any", not sure whats wrong with the girls out there)

They have to have something press them against your skin, floor, wall, shoe, or clothing. Like xx said, most reactions attributed to recluse, are caused by victim scratching and pushing bacteria into the skin.

No, they certainly DO bite, the venom spreads and is a staph like infection and the area that's bit becomes necrotic. Because they are not particular aggressive USUALLY bites have taken place when a person has accidently stepped into a shoe where a spider has been, put on a pair of pants that have a spider in the leg, reached into an area inadvertently touching the spider, or gotten into a sleeping bag and pushed directly onto the spider, as a result of the spider feeling threatened, and they got bit, usually those that have been bit have touched that spider somehow. When the spider feels threatened it bites. It's one of the under 100 species of spiders that will bite humans (there are only about 60 that bite? of thousands of spider species).. It's usually not fatal to healthy adults BUT to young kids and elderly it has been. When people have been bitten, it's USUALLY because they accidently touch the spider and it feels threatened. It won't chase you into the house if it's sitting on your mailbox, no.. But all you need to do is come in contact with a brown recluse unkowingly and it'll likely bite. If the spider lands on you, or falls onto you, feels threatened like ANY spider, it will bite as any spider that bites will..

Brown Recluse can and do bite. They are reclusive by nature, hence the name. They take refuge in old bags, boogs, boxes, shoes, etc. and wait for a meal to pass by. Their bite isusually not noticed until much later after the bite occurs as there isn't a burning sensation that is usually associated with the bite of an insect such as a wasp or ant. The Brown Recluse bite introduces a toxin into the flesh that actually kills the cells and causes necrosis. Most severe cases occur when folks ignore a (@$%!) sore thinking it will go away, but it just grows larger and larger. The sore doesn't even appear until a few days after the bite occurs. Usually, the only thing noticed is a red mark on the skin.
If anyone has other bug questions feel free to ask. I don't mind being the resident "bug guy" here since that is my profession.

Steve,
You're an Entomologist ? Or do you just have lots of pets ? Although you might be a hortoculturist, or even a pest extinguishing dude like the Terminex man. OK, that's my three guesses
Anyway, little critters can be quite sophisticated little cultures, and a VERY intelligent species. Ants and Bee behaviour is fascinating. Read about it... Also saw it on the Discovery channel !
What are those large spiders in the middle east ? Desert spiders ? Chicks dig those !!!

Cripes, you guys!! This started out as a gal's thread.
One of the only things that helps keep us SANE around spiders is the way men always say "ah, hun, don't worry... they don't bite... they're scared of humans"
And here you all are saying "Yeah, buddy, you better believe they'll bite".
Think of the ladies... please... we need to be reassured about stuff like that. :D
Now, not to sound like a wimp, I'm not scared of too much... but spiders will make me squeal like a girlie girl quicker than anything. (unless... it's a snake... or a bee) Blech- I'm outta here.
