Do you use props in your show?  If so, which ones get used the most??

It seems the maracas and tambourine are the most used at my shows and for some odd reason people like the stuffed banana toy (no kidding).

When I was assisting my friends karaoke show as Lord Air Guitar, I brought along a couple of non-functioning electric guitars (I hate the cheesy blow up ones) and once a violin (great for It's A Beautiful Day's White Bird). People would love doing "air guitar" with them. I think it added to the performances and things like maracas and tambourines certainly can't hurt. We also had plastic half size saxophones as well (Clinton was prez at the time)

Three large Rubbermaid tubs with hats and costumes, with some naughty things, a medium sized one with assorted instruments and our "guitar box" which holds 4 guitars, a keyboard, and various sunglasses.  It also stores the mic stands and mics, and probably some other stuff. LOL.

the large blow up microphones are hysterical.  The blow up guitars just slay me... talk about a buncha adults acting like we're 13 again, watching MTV! LOL!

I don't like wigs, cause you inherit someone else's sweat and maybe lice or something...

I just came from the Isis and GiGi karaoke show and it was fun and friendly. There was a bigger crowd than expected too.

They had lots o' props. I think they're still looking for a cow bell. They're gonna need it when I do Don't Fear The Reaper. LMAO

I really don't have anything against the inflatables, they just don't suit me. I guess if I am going to go around as Lord Air Guitar, I better have some mad props. Now you got me talking about this, I wanna go dust off those guitars and hit the karaoke bars again.

Wow, I didn't realize that I was in such a minority.  I can't stand props, they annoy the heck out of me.

I wouldn't feel bad about that... There are many shows that don't. The bar where we are hosting had gotten to where no one clapped or even cared if anyone was singing. And what we are doing to trying to bring new life.   And it actually seems to be working, which is very cool.

Post subject:  Re: Props

With us it isn't usually the singer playing with the instruments.  It's several of my regulars who seemed to "man the band."  The crowd enjoys it and for the very most part, new singers have commented how great it felt to not only have their '3 min" of fame but to feel like they have a band behind them.

I don't use props when singing but provided the blow ups at my shows & they got used pretty regularly.  We also had the heavy cardboard guitars that looked like real guitars & the blow up ones got picked over those, so we quit bringing in the others.

Sometimes props can get annoying - I agree. That's when the KJ should step in and say something to the person banging the tambourine during a rendition of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" LMAO .

I didn't get a cow bell because I thought it may be to over bearing and also concidered the fact maybe less than 1% of songs actually call for a cow bell.  :D

It all depends on the venues atmosphere - every show is different

Babs,

Do you still have that link for the air guitars etc. that you listed before on one of my previous threads. I've lost it. I think they're worth a try, especially for the Skynyrd/Country/Rock crowd that comes in. I can mount them on the walls around the stage for an asthetic enticement when not in use. Definately can't hurt!

Ebay is showing some 12 air guitars for $20 (shipping  incl.) this seems too cheap but I know their just inflatables. I want something that has a reasonable lifespan and looks good for decorative purposes also.

Air guitar/sax/microphone and maracas and tamborines are what I'm looking for to improve my stage. Quality and $$ is important here.

Thanks ahead of time.   :)
