ep the sm58 is a very forgiving mic I am proof positive you dont have to be a great singer to sound good with an sm58...I do have to be having a good night to sound as smooth with my seinnheiser because its so freakin clear there is no margin for error. the sm58 hides a multitude of sins

I have both the Sm58, and Beta58, i like them both. Both are great, both are a little different. I noticed the Beta58 is a little hotter then the 58, but doesn't have the curve the sm58 has. How do some of you compare them?

I think a lot of other well known artists use the SM58. Last year when I bought my 2 SM58s the salesman told me he had a special price on another brand of mic that was just as good as the SM58. I don't remember the name of the other mic but I ask him to plug in both and let me sing on them. After singing a bit on each without me saying a word the salesman said he wasn't going tell anyone else that the other mic was as good as an SM58. Besides great sound I had heard that they were rugged. I had no desire to test the rugged part but less than 6 months after I bought them one was dropped 5 ft onto a bare concrete floor. I had to take the wire ball off and straigten it out but it was otherwise undamaged. Jim

I know a few people who were Pro musicians and a bunch of bands that get regular gigs. They all swear by the SM58 and SM57 for some applications. It is the standard for pretty much any wired mic in the public performance setting. For studio work many of them use different mics, but that is when they dont have to worry about any background sound. According to reputation the sound control from the SM58 allows people to sing into the mic without amplifying background noise coming from other directions, and that technology is what allows most public performance. According to rep also, they can take major abuse and keep going. I bought 3 on saturday and they feel VERY solid (and heavy) compared to many of the lightweight cheaper mics I usually see in Karaoke.

I love my SM-58. Everybody tells me other ones are better, and I have bought a Sennheiser, Audix, and the Shure Beta 58A. I still keep going back to my SM58.

I did notice one thing with Martina and I never gave it much thought but I think I figured it out When she is not singing she holds the mic away. I think she is inhaling a bunch of air which could be heard on the mic. I love watching the pros on tv Ray charles used to bob his head it wasnt keeping time it was working the mic.

Had the same 3 SM58's in operation since 94. They've been dropped, slung, flung, kicked & one even dropped in a pitcher of beer - except for replacing the mic screens on them once or twice a year, they all work & sounds as good as day 1! Actually in all honesty I did have to finally replace 1, not from quitting working, the fitting where the mic plug latches in the barrel wore out & don't hold the cord in anymore. The new one took it's place & the old will move into service where it will be stationary.

i've mic'd instruments with the Beta Greens, and the SM-57's and 58's, 48's and Uni 565's. I can't hear a difference. Even in a head-to-head but I don't have the ability to EQ like pros do either.

When I was just getting into the business a few years back....one of the first things I did was start paying attention to what mics you see at other places, what mics you see on tv with professional, bands, singers......I also talked to many many people about mics. The choice was very clear, Shure SM58! Industry standard for years. There is a reason for this. I've got (2) wired and also a wireless with SM58 guts. Sure there are better mics out there, but price compared.......I'm sticking with my SM58's. I've tried a few of the beta models recently, they also perform very well with unique differences, some are hotter, some are clearer, etc. MrD

One I like is the axs 1 It has a shorter grille I lost the grille at an outside boat club gig and never could find one. I had to take one off of a beta...
