Before buying that on Ebay Ollie, I'd want to see what Elderly Instruments, Mandolin Bros, and G. Gruhn ask for that guitar. Reason being these companies have VERY fair exchange and return policies and really stick with the buyer thru the whole experience.. You talk with a rep on the phone, and you can actually try out guitars for a minimal fee and keep the one you like in the case of Mandolin bros, and elderly. While this price might be extremely competitive for such a guitar I'd be curious, and will check my Orion Bluebooks on the guitar. I've always been quite fond of the J-200 (although that's likely large for Charmin) |

I know Ollie, I will lookup the actual value of that lap-steel. This is how the vintage market exploits.. Alot of these guitars were well under 100 when they were produced, and really little appreciates except nostalgic value. While certain wooden instruments of course appreciate, there's a point where others fall apart, and in fact depreciate... But collectors pay thru the nose. Too bad my 50's Gibby LG0 really hasn't appreciated that much. |

The Sunburst Lapsteel BR4 w OHSC was in production part of 1946. Towards the end of 1946 the BR6 was all that was produced until 1950 when the BR9 and BR6 were produced.. Actual bluebook value on that guitar as of 5 years ago (don't have the latest Orion) was Sell excellent condition 580 Sell Average condition 480 Buy Average 345 Buy Excellent 420 Now I'd be REALLY surprised if over the past five years the guitars actual value appreciated that much. |

Steven I have a Martin D28 with the martin hard shell case, guitar is in just good condition, its been used. I do want to sell it check your book for its value please oh its a 1972 |

Steven, honestly, no funniness in this post.... I would LOVE to ever get the chance to spend a couple days with you running around to vintage shops and estate sales and all that jazz... just looking at vintage guitars and trying them out. I think we'd wear ourselves to a frazzle, since we have a common interest in that area, and I think we'd both have a hey-day with it. My prob, with buying ANY instrument, most especially a guitar, online- is that I have issues with wanting to hold it, strum it, pluck it, twang it, Lol. I'd HAVE to have one in my hand and get a feel for it (or not) and hear it play before I could fork over big money for one. I could never order a nice one sight unseen. :no: I've bought a couple fiddles and a mandolin online, but those are pretty easily adaptable to any player, and they were cheap enough that I could just resale them if I didn't like 'em. A guitar ( a nice vintage one) would be another story. Someday..... :D |

Ollie, During a call a few years back in hopes of finding some info on a Carvin Lapsteel I own, I found Carvin exceptionally rude. I was quite civil, and furnished them with info, yet the two reps I spoke with had no interest in helping me find that my 8-string lapsteel was 1956 or 57, they didn't even care to inform me as to what year Carvin left Covina, CA |

Just for haha's, check out what many of the Gibby's are moving for on Ebay. You don't have to pay that kind of money.. Sure old guitars command more in todays exploited vintage market, BUT, All guitars kept in good shape age, mellow, etc. Trick is not to buy a Gibson from the Norlin Period (mid-70's to early 80's) when they lost a lot of their Michigan Luthiers during the transition to Nashville. Quality delined on all their guitars of that period for the most part.. 60's Gibsons were trusthworthy, you need to research a Brands time-line and find out what the consensus is about quality during certain periods. I live a few miles away from the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, rest assured that the best luthiers they had are still right here in Kalamazoo building guitars under the Heritage name now. As far as staying away from mid seventies Gibsons, I'd only be leary of the one's made the last couple of years ( after the average builders found out they were going to be without a job) 79 for sure 78 maybe. I go down to the old factory every once in awhile ( I have friends there) You should see all the old body blanks and necks they have in storage upstairs. I sure wish I could get my hands on some of the goodies they have stashed up there.

Oh Yeah, The local Luthiers when Gibson moved entirely out've that Kalamazoo plant (three of the senior luthiers I believe) formed Heritage in 1985 when Gibson moved entirely to Nashville. The H-535 and a few other H models were much nicer than the Norlin plant semi-hollows 335's and 345's during that period IMHO.. I've played Heritage Semi's, but never the newer solid body LP types they made. 50's and 60's Kalamazoo guitars, and Kalamazoo Epiphones were decent guitars too.. The original Casino, Sorrento, etc were nicely constructed. Since we're within a few years of age, we could likely exchange stories about some of the guitars we passed up on late 60's early 70's because the seller decided to ask more than a 100 bucks... (If I could only go back in time and agree to the 150 bucks they changed their minds too) |
