Anyone have an opinion on the Yamaha StagePas 300 for home use?  Thanks.

I can vouch for the Yamaha part, but I don't own the "StagePas". I have this one, and have been happy so far with it's quality. http://www.americanmusical.com/item--i- ... C-PAK.html
It ended up being a little overkill for home use, but I have had the opportunity 1 time so far to use it in a large area, It will crank pretty good! ;)

I think you'll be happy with Yamaha quality.

Good luck,
Jim.

I have heard the unit, it being used for karaoke at a local place. It sounds nice for what it is, but you can't get past the 8" speakers, which just don't have the presence of units with bigger woofers.

Don't get me wrong -- it would make a nice home unit. And I think it would be fine.

I am sure it is quality, being Yamaha. Personally I wouldn't pay that much for something I am not going to be constantly transporting. You can get much more bang for your buck with something else. I would go with Behringer, having had excellent luck with them (I now own two of their powered mixers, a regular mixer, and some powered speakers), but others might recommend Phonic as there are still reservations about Behringer. If you read the reviews on them, though, they are generally excellent. And I know a couple of pros who use them as I do, and the stuff rocks.

I just bought two B212A active speakers, and man they are great. They sound excellent, and they have tons of power.  They are pretty light (31 lbs.)  and have enough oomph to play a pretty large room. And for me, they are flexible to be used as  monitors with my other gear.

Two of those and a small mixer like the 1202FX make a damn good system for $510 or so ($600 with cables). They have twice the power of the Stagepas.

But the active speaker has the disadvantage of having to run power to each speaker, so you need three power cords. (With extensions if you are going to have them up on sticks.) And you really need an EQ unit. So I don't think I would recommend that route.

A Behringer PMH880S with two B212 speakers would be $550 as well ($600 with cables). That would get you down to one power cord, give you 12" speakers, an EQ and effects, and give you the ability to do bigger setups. That is what I would do, personally. You think you don't want the power, then the next thing you know you want to play a picnic or do a big family party at a hotel.

But if you like clean, quality packages, I am sure the Yamaha is nice if you want to live with 8" speakers.

DW,

That looks like a great system for home use, and also should be able to do small to medium sized venues if you ever want to do that.

The power rating on the amp is good at 150 watts. The 8" speakers show an excellent rating of 112db and they get down to 55Hz which is pretty good for an 8" speaker. They should provide decent bass. Overall this is a nice small package PA with nice component matching.

With the power rating, it could drive some larger speakers if you ever wanted to do that.

The only thing I don't like is the equalizer secton with only a "high" "low" adjustment.

Thanks everyone for all the great & helpful responses.  I've been a little reluctant about getting Behringer products since it's been hit & miss experience for me in my line of work (had good studio monitor, but noisy mixer).  But based on Mckyj's recommendations, I'll take a second look.  Thanks again.

I have a Stagepas 300 bought for home use and to take to family get togethers and small partys.  I compared it in the store before I bought it with several other systems. I think it was the best sounding system that I could carry in my car and still take my wife too.  I use this with a RSQ triple tray (no longer made) two Shure SM58 corded mikes and a 13" tv on one of the roll around stands.  I bought speaker stands with a carrying case and the Yamaha case made for the stagepas. Also I carry a six foot  table that folds in the middle. Any bigger PA and I would need a van.  I may not be as up on everything as some others in this forum but I have been very pleased.

The first party was my moms 80th birthday. Average age at party was about 60 and the police came to report the neighbors were upset about the noise.

Thanks for the info Jim.  I am leaning towards the StapePas 300 for the very reason you've stated, size.  I want to be able to take down the PA system when not in use as I already have home theater speakers everywhere.

If you can recall, what were the other systems you were comparing the StagePas to?  Did the bigger systems sound better?  Also, I've read some reviews that the reverb on the StagePas isn't too great and that you have to turn it way up to hear the effect...what you do think?

BTW, funny story about 60 year olds getting busted by cops...LOL.

Depends on the system, the Stagepass isn't going to give you alot of bass response.  For home use it'll probably be fine.

Jim,

When I looked at the specs (see previous post above), I was impressed. For a small system, it looks like it should do quite well. The 8" speakers show a decent bass response down to 55Hz. I've had 12" that did about the same. given the 112db, and 150 watts, it should be plenty loud. According to you that's correct.

From a portability standpoint, which was your reason for buying it, seems to be perfect.

Sure there are better, bigger systems, but for the reasons and needs you and DW are talking about, this seems to fit the bill quite well. It may be a little more expensive, but again, I don't think you'll find the performance in some of the less expensive systems.

Dennis,

The only two other small PA systems store had was a Kustom which was a bit cheaper and a Fender that was just a bit more. I also listen to a larger Yamaha system with 12 inch speakers.  The larger system did have a bit better base and I am sure would go louder.  The small Kustom system wasn't even close to the stagepas in sound quality. The Fender system was good but I preferred the Stagepas. Its been over a year since I bought it, so as I remember I thought the Yamaha had a cleaner sound.  I don't use the reverb when I sing but use it some with other singers I didn't compare the reverb before I bought it.  It works but may be a weak point in the system.  This was a replacement to an all in one system that had quit working.  This takes a bit longer to set up but the sound is worth it.  One thing that helps setups is to buy a package of multicolored electical tapes (dollar store) and color code all the cords and plugs with pieces of tape.  This also helps you quickly identify who has which mic. I stole that idea from a professional.

I don't do do any professional work with this but I have family that loves to sing and they all look forward to our get togethers. I have been thinking about doing some hosting for money but this probably would not be loud enough for someone to use professionally. Anyway I keep it set up all the time in our dinning room which is about 15x18 and is open to the living room and kitchen. With the Volume at about 1/3 the way up the space is filled with sound. I did have to buy a longer cord to one of the speakers. The cords that come with it will work fine if you set up the mixer in the middle but I like to put the mixer and player off to one side. The only other problems I had was that with a good system my old cheap mics were not good enough and Sweet Georgia Brown really doesn't sound that good. I also have a record turn table hooked up to it. We use it for our stereo as it sounds better than our home theater system.  I am 56 years young and sing on it about every day.

My best advice is to go to a store where you can listen and compare it yourself. You may have different wants, needs or just a better ear. I bought it from a local store that gave me just a bit better price than I had seen it on the internet. Of course sales tax ate that up but hey they spent the time to let me compare, actually singing on the systems and showed me how everything worked.  When I look at all the money I have spent on CDs the system is the cheapest part.  By the way I registered as a poster just so I could let you know about my experience with the Stagepas. I have been reading the posts for a while but had never posted.

Thanks for the additional info.  Since you didn't seem to think too highly about the reverb on the system, I was wondering if it's possible to connect an external FX unit to the StagePas 300 mixer.  What do you pros think?

Here's a pic of the mixer for reference.

I'm not a pro, but  I don't see how. There is no monitor bus or aux send, and no insert. You would need to put it inline -- you could buy a Behringer 1002FX for $80 and run the mics through that, but that sort of defeats the purpose of having the portable unit.

Unless you run it inline with the mic, there is no other way to connect it.

I was wondering if you had made any progess on your system choice.
