I'm having this argument with my dad,  he claims he just got back from a few stores and todays best rated notebook systems according to Consumers Reports on electronics are Apple, Toshiba, and dell is far down on the list.   Is this so ?   He claims if you look at all aspects overall the lowest maint in general and the best regardless of money is apple, and Toshiba.

I've never had a problem with my Dell, although I also changed out the video, sound cards, changed out the cd roms, added more USB/Firewire ports, max memory & bigger hard drives.

{edit} oops you are talking notebooks not pc's.
Laptops I had an older Toshiba that was a champ, too slow to do any kind of show hosting, but for general purposes never let me down.  My Dad just bought a new Gateway that he bought for his personal music & karaoke collection which so far is working & sounds great.

hey lonman, sorry to hijack this post, but.  I bought the CORRECT (I'm sure of this) ram upgrade for my laptop, installed it, and my computer is not liking it, I reinstalled the old stuff, and it is ok again.  What can i do to get the new stuff installed right, I thought the stuff was plug and play?

Oh,1 year ago the guys at Comp USA said Dells and HPs were the way to go, HPs a little better though according to them. k, sorry for hijack

many motherboard chipsets won't recognize newer or larger Mhz memory.

We bought 1 GB of pc3200, and the motherboard wouldn't recognize over pc2700... didn't know at the time I bought it that it was an older model, with an older chipset.

Check out your laptop or motherboard paperwork!

Are you trying to add the new ram to the existing ram ie available slot (don't know if laptops work like that or not).  I know in desktops, if the RAM sticks are different or if they aren't 'paired' with like manus, then the computer won't work right.  That happened to me, I had 256 ram in my tower & 3 available slots, I bought 2 more 256 cards (at the time this was all I could get) & added them, the computer went haywire, I pulled out the original 256 & all was well.

Actually, you may be right.  I am running one stick of 256 mb with one stick of new 1024 mb.  Windows and HP says it is ok to do this, but it might not be, according to some of the info I have read.  I am going to try one more thing, running the 1 gb stick all by itself.

More likely though, according to HP and one other place I read, is that even if it is rating correctly (mhz, pin numbers, pc-2700, sodimm, ddr) it still may not be compatible for some other unknown reason you have to be a true geek to understand.  I will probably end up returning it and taking my pc up to a store.  I'll let ya know how it goes. thanks lon.  jim
