Do any of you know of any karaoker singers that are never nervous at all about getting up in front of strangers to sing, but are petrified to utter two sentences on the mic?  I am one of these people and I don't know what the explanation is. Any ideas why singing is not intimidating, but speaking is?

That is typical I was one of those that could give public speeches or sing but not sing and talk. I never did figure out why. It has something to with the speech is preprepared and the words are there in karaoke. Here is how you solve it. Relax. Talk to your friends on the mic like you were standing close to them. Get in the habit of chatter chatter from one to the next. At some point you find yourself talking to the audience the same way and connecting with them with flair.  Karaoke is not formal But when it is second nature to talk to a crowd even up to thousands if formality is required it is not a problem.

With experience you can read the crowd as a singer or host. I probably laugh on the mic more than anybody. Relax and have fun but keep a constant energy level going.

Thats what tickles me when threads are started how do you call singers up what do you say in between songs? I couldnt tell you Im just sitting there chattering and its never the same. If somebody is asking to bump Im talking to him on the mic so the whole crowd knows he is trying to cheat..

My theory on that is fairly simple...to speak in front of people, you have to make it up as you go - you have to relate to people who, for the most part are complete strangers.  There is not any real way to know what the reaction to what you say will be - and if it doesn't go well...it's all you.  But, to sing in front of them, you KNOW what comes next - whether from memory or because the words are there in front of you.  You have a pretty good idea of what the reaction will be and what to expect.  If it doesn't go well, it's not really you because they weren't your words and thoughts.

LOL That's a great idea karyoker! I think I will give that a try! LMAO I use a wireless headset so I will just flip the switch out of stand by and let the whole crowd hear this clown and also they will know for sure that I will not allow it.

Kinda like stutterers, they can sing, and you'd never know they stuttered. You have to think more, and make more selective decisions when you speak versus sing.

Different parts of the brain are at work when singing vs speaking.

I sang in a band yrs ago and never spoke to the crowd because of nerves. The other main singer did all the talking. I've never had a problem with just singing, but when it came time to be a karaoke host knowing I'd have to be the one doing the talking I was mortified. The man who trained me gave me great advice. He said never put the mic down, when someone addresses you from the crowd or a singer talks to you etc... respond with the mic. Of course with in reason.
After time it will become natural to talk over the mic and you won't even think about it.

I'm very comfortable now and don't even think about it when I host. I think when you try anything new you are nervous, but if you do it all the time it becomes easier.
