Hi,
My wife loves to sing, and her birthday is coming up, so I wanted to buy her a karaoke player.  Neither of us are very serious, we just love to sing and make fools of ourselves!  hahahaa.  So i don't want to spend too much money.  I have seen some Karaoke/DVD players out there on ebay and other places, but there are so many different kinds.  So for around $200 or less, any suggstions of something that will make sense for us?

You might be able to get a player for less then $200, but what do you want to connect it to? A home theater sound system will not work, so why not consider something like the Fender Passport series (see below) if you just want to play around at home?

Why will a home stereo system not work?  I am extremely new to any of this.  I see things about mixers, but I have no idea what they are, or how I would use them.  Seriously, we are probably going to use this thing like 2 times a month.  So I don't want to have to get a whole crazy setup.  I just thought there was something simple that I could use.  I came here cause I know you guys are probably experts.

So these Karaoke/DVD Players can't just be hooked up into my receiver?  Or to my TV directly?  Will I blow out the speakers or something?

The consenus on HOME THEATER systems is that the speakers will not be able to HANDLE live vocals as produced by Karaoke Singing.  Home theaters speakers are geared for MUSIC PLAYBACK only.  You stand a good chance of blowing the speakers if you use for karaoke and if they don't blow out the sound will not be what you are looking for.  You are better off looking and searching for ALL IN ONE KARAOKE SYSTEMS to use JUST AT HOME.  - If you have any futre plans of taking your karaoke set up outside to entertain or to parties etc. You will need to look at a more PA SYSTEM based set up.  You can get an inexpensive one but not for under $200.

Any suggestions for a good all-in-1 system that is reasonably priced?  Again, I am looking for under $200.

Also, I still have a tough time believing that my home stereo system won't be able to handle karaoke.  We won't be screaming at the top of our lungs.

Another question, I am a guitar player, and I have a huge guitar amp.  Do you think that I could send the audio through that instead of my stereo?

Karaoke will be able to play through your home system, however, the stereos are designed for music playback - already processed & compressed music/HT.  Live vocals are not & chances are the tweeters in the speakers will be the first to go - it only takes ONE time of someone getting into a high not situation before it goes 'pop'.  Also the mic inputs built into most karaoke players are not very good either so what happens is the singer will generally tend to turn it up more to compensate plus the inputs tend to sound muddy so you will generally tend to turn the high frequency on the stereo up to compensate - another cause to the demise of the tweeters.
LIke stated you'd be better off getting an all in one unit.  You could actually get something like

This will get your feet wet without damaging your home system PLUS you can hook it up to a more pro style PA system when you decide you want to get more serious.

Great.  Thanks.  Do you know anything about the STVD-1001 Singing Machine.  

I was really hoping to get one that would play more than just CD+G's.  And the STVD-1001 plays other forms, as well as DVDs.  Have you ever used that one before?  I appreciate your help.

Never used that model so can't comment.  But the $195 pricetag is right in your ballpark.  It's not real powerful, but does have all the outputs to be able to connect to a pro PA - although it's not as portable.  Comes with 2 mics - one wired, one wireless (interesting).  I only saw one review on it, but that person was very happy with his.
