This may be a better question for the Tech Forum but I'll try it here. I need to buy recording equipment for home. I don't know whether to go with computer software or a digital recorder that will download to a pc. I intend to use only karaoke tracks with voice added for the recordings. Your experience and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks....Phil

I record via my laptop. I have output and input from laptop to power-mixer and find this quite adiquate. Depends really on the sort of quality you require.

Got one the other day for home use. ("After reading the directions and following them") I was very impressed with the quality of the recording I was able to make.
And after some tweakng the mix it was even better.

Hey Phil, I guess everyone has different ways of doing things...I use an external m-audio recording interface and condenser mic I record into adobe audition

Looks like my PM didn't send for some reason...it's not showing in my sentbox. Anyway, I was gonna say that any help you can get...send my way to! I'm frustrated to the point of canceling my deluxe showcase membership because I cannot produce a recording to sound worth a crap! I'm obviously approaching it from the wrong direction. I've been tryin to just do a live recording as I sing through my PA system/PC karaoke player. Looks like several are using a different approach by using a device like the M-Audio http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOMOBILEPRE or something similar, and using a condenser mic and software like Adobe Audition aka Cool Edit Pro.

I use a Dell laptop plugged into my PA/mixer for my karaoke player, and come from the PA/mixer rec out jacks into a Dell desktop PC, running Audacity. I cannot get the vocals/music levels to come out right at all. I'm ending up with distortion in the vocal part of the finished recording..no matter how I set my PA or my Audacity!

I don't think it's an issue with the PA system, as the live sound output in the room is fine, and this Yamaha PA will crank up and still be crystal clear!

I've talked to Sharona a little about this same topic, and she says she hardly even uses her PA system and karaoke player anymore..except maybe when she has guests over to do some karaoke, or gets in the mood to just do karaoke. If she is recording, the PA/mixer/player aren't even in the loop.

I suppose it's just my mindset on how I thought it would be better through my PA/mixer system, which doesn't seem to be the case. I first thought, "ok, I don't mind throwing a little more money at the issue to resolve it", but it may end up being more that a little! I'm revisiting this in my mind, and wondering if it's worth the additional cost, just get a good recording! After all, I'm not exactly the next americal idol!!!...ol...and other than posting in SS, what am I gonna do with a recording anyway!

Huh??? My last post didn't post, no matter.  What it said was "Buy a hard disk recorder."  It's a specific tool for your specific job.  For ease of use and sound quality computer based recording doesn't compare.

I've always had very good luck with Tascam products.  Their bare-bones 8-track is about $300.00 last time I looked.  I haven't played with one recently but I have used several of their older units and was always please with the result.  A good mixer section and good ADC/DACs and very easy to use.

I was able to find an affordable and portable home recording studio to record my Karaoke tracks at home or on the road. The free software allows you to import the tracks into your laptop or desktop and make edited mp3s. I don't have to rent a studio anymore. You can get more info @ http://www.vocaltrainingwarrior.com

I've had very good luck using audacity once I got used to it. I will  assume you are recording from your PA board directly into your soundcard mic input which wouldn't be my first choice but still should be acceptable. Take a look at your soundcard settings and the input gain on audacity itself. It sounds like it's just getting over driven. Like I mentioned, I use audacity sometimes and have had no distortion problems, keep in mind I also use Sonar 6 producer for big projects, but for smaller one I prefer audacity because of its simplicity.

I use Sonor LE (Cakewalk) and Edirol UA-25 interface on my laptop. It allows you to download midi or audio files and record vocals over the top. I do have sample recordings but no way of sharing on here, I don't think. If anyone would like a sample please e-mail me on brian@costakaraoke.com. Great site.

I love my Tascam 8 track digital recorder/mixer.  I use Audacity, and have both a condenser and a good dynamic mic.

The Tascam rocks with a 40 gig HDD...

I plan on getting meh hands on a multi effects box soon

I've been trying to figure out how to send the mix from my mixer back to my computer for some time (haven't tried very hard really ...).  I've tried a couple of different outs, but was unsuccessful.  Can someone tell me what the best 'out' to computer (both music and vocals) for the following mixer would be:

I'd play with tape out and phons/ctrl out. phons/ctrl would probably the best bet.

I'm going to key on the word "Best" that you used in your question. As we all know "best" is rarely "cheapest". I personally would use an interface either to Firewire or USB, that has always gotten me the cleanest input and output. There are several good ones out there, I know some use the M-Audio, Edirol makes a good one, I use a lexicon Omega, I'm sure they all do a very good job. Anyway, if you want the "best" way to do it, there's my two cents....cheers

I use m-audio fasttrack external usb record interface and a pre-amp. Plug the condenser into the pre-amp and the pre-amp into the m-audio...if I had been smart when I bout the m-audio I would have future-proofed and bought something with a pre-amp built in, but never dreamed I would ever use a condenser...guess one should never say never
