Post subject:  You have it in your book questions???

We have a problem, nightly/weekly with people coming up with slips filled out...then all they really want is the MUSIC played, not the KARAOKE version.  Which is fine, if we have it.  Now I pry have 75% or more of the stuff in the karaoke book, musically as well.  Everyone always seems to pick the real obscure stuff that I don't have.  I haul about 1k music cds with me all the time.  The biggest issue is people coming up asking for a song and I have to say......karaoke or music or just to play?  They respond with "Oh, we don't sing...just the music"  Then I have to say, "Oh, we don't have that"..they inevitably bring the book with them ready to point out the page to me, then say..."It's right here, in your book"  I then of course have to say..."It's a karaoke book and just because we have it karaoke don't mean that we have it musically as well"  The problem is that they never understand the concept and are totally in denial about it....sometime they think I'm lying to them.  My books are clearly maked...for KARAOKE ONLY, but this doesn't stop the ?'s.  I try to have it all but it's not that easy.  Do people in your area do this too??!??!?!  Drives me nutz!  Thanks, MrD

I only do karaoke, so I don't have that problem, but
I can see how it would be very frustrating.

I know there are people who will give you hard time because you do both, KJ/DJ. I won't go there because obviously that is what you do and it works for you.

Not experiencing your problem I can only guess how to help.
What if you designate in your books to what you have in karaoke version only or music only, so they can reference what they can hand in for music only or do you have seperate books already (karaoke book or music only book). Or what if you have seperate books and slips for both making them obviously different. Karaoke books and slips flourescent orange and maybe music only books and slips flourescent green with the music only slips saying not for karaoke and the karaoke slips saying for karaoke only.

You are always going to get the random bone head that just doesn't get it, but maybe that will help allieviate some of them. I hope I help.

I know once in a while I still have to explain to people that I don't pick what people sing and no matter how many times they ask me to play a certain song unless the singer wants to sing it it isn't getting played. Dah !

While the idea of a music only book would work well, I don't have one..nor do I plan to produce on.  My "music" library changes waaaaaaaay more frequently than my karaoke library.  My books are for Karaoke Only and are marked as such.  I think it's pretty obvious.  I can't imagine going to a show, then filling out a karaoke slip in hopes the KJ/DJ would just play the music...I don't get it.  Some of the places I play it would be hard to draw in the 'karaoke only' crowd.  There just isn't that much draw for it...the few places that try it usually fail.  I've wanted to do a non alcoholic karaoke/dance club for people around here for a while.  I think it would do great.  Maybe designate certain days for each.  I don't know what I'm thinking...I have waaaaay too many irons in the fire now, lol.  Thanks, MrD

I don't blaim you for not wanting to make more books. It is such a pain in the bum.

But what if you make seperate sign in slips for each?

Computerize the song lists.  Save money on book printing and get people off of your case.

Like Babs, I don't DJ.  So I kindly tell them so.  What I have had a increase in, is people coming in bring a "regular CD" thinking that if I put it in my computer that it will play and show the lyrics.   It's hard for me to believe that there are many out there that think this is possible.

I have to admit I think the "artists" are missing the boat by not making a dual disc.  One for music and one for karaoke.  They have already done the most expensive part; laying down the tracks.

I love that...I have had that request more than several times.  While playing a musical track, someone will come up and ask me if I can put the words on the screen.....Some of the people are NOT regulars to Karaoke, for sure!  Babs, I do like the musical request slips, hmmmmmmmmmm.  I may give that a try.  Printed on Special or colored paper.  Good idea, thanks....MrD

I don't like the idea of NO books, at all.  If it works for you, that is great.  So many of the people use them as idea generators......MrD

No dj'ing here either, but I do get asked to just play a song, I just explain that we are a karaoke club & that if you want to hear a song, you need to sing it or get someone to sing it.

After scouring dozens of hock shops and good will for used cd's and joning cd of the month clubs we have about 9500 dj songs We have the top 150 for every decade from the 50's until now.

I have never had that problem When a stranger comes up and asks for a song I ask is that karaoke or DJ? If its karaoke I hand them a slip ok please fill out this slip so we can get your name spelled right and get you in the system and get you in rotation.

If its DJ Ill do a quick search and see.. If the rotation is small Ill say ok we will try to squeeze  it in and then smile and but you gotta dance to it!! If the rotation is large I will say we are primarily karaoke right now I will say we can play some of it.. The next fill is their request and we let it play for 30 seconds or so... If a couple gets up to dance it is played all the way.. Ive never had a problem with this format yet..

Just make sure it's ok with the bar first.  I worked one where they wanted me DONE at a certain time & refused any extra music at close as they wanted the customers to feed their jukebox & me giving free music away was taking money out of their pocket

LMAO Ive never been in that situation before but I can imagine it. Sat was a very slow night as we have the Greeley Stampede going now. WE had some old singers come in late and we are supposed to shutdown at 12... We drug it out till 12:30 The mngr was sitting at the end of the bar and you could tell she was dead beat The bar tender was giving us dirty looks.. LOL But they absolutely love us..

This is a pizza bar where the customers rule The customers are the boss when it comes to entertainment.. It is not a typical bar situation It is such a joy to do a show there..

In fact it doesnt even have a jukebox Pipes music throughout the building..

I have 2 bartenders at our club that if we aren't done on time that they will talk to the manager so it doesn't happen again.  Most of the bartenders are cool if we go over a bit, but I do have to ask their permission first.

Usually I do too I am in constant contact with the bartender and mngr. (volume etc)

This was a rare instance. When you have a good working relationship both sides give when it counts or is productive in the long run.
