It seems we have always been ahead of everybody else in trends. Whats going on here now is the bottom feeders got burned out by listening to singers singing the same thing night after night and sounding bad and are gone. The winning combination now is a good restaraunt (or pizza parlor in our case with video arcade and big jungle jym) and start playing music (not loud)at about 7:30...The trend here now is singers dont like long waits so each good little bar has 5-10 good singers. I think this is in part to DUI laws gas etc. The result is more of a band type deal where the bar is packed Everybody has a smile on their face and the energy level is max..There are hardly any sloppy drunks and it is a lot easier on the KJ..esp with shorter rotations. The singers actually dictate (to the smart bar owners) what system to hire so of course the best system and selection with the high energy level is the ones doing the gigs.. And its nice to have a $25 dollar bar tab and get a good meal!!!! |

That's pretty much how it is here too. Very small places with small crowds. Lots of small resteraunts and bar/grill type establishments. For the most part though the KJs have very poor systems usually computer driven with a couple of cheap speakers and powered mixer.....great song selection though. I guess most of us mobile KJs with good systems just don't want to go through the trouble for what little they are willing to pay. There is too much money in private psrties and events to want those jobs except on occasion.....5 times the pay usually. The biggest trend here seems to be one man bands. That's what they are called here when an ex KJ takes his system and sings all night himself with karaoke tracks. The bars seem to hire them sooner than if they applied as a karaoke host. I just don't get it...most are not that great and it gets so old listening to the same person for hours. Maybe that's the point...no one is listening? |

That's my wife and my winning combo. We go to one show weekly -- the one with good food that starts at 6:30. Everything is as you describe, and we love it. So do all the rest of the regulars, who are there just about every week. |

I had 2 singers come in last night I have known for years but hadnt seen for a long time. Three singers gave me a hug before they left and I even had a non-singer give me a hug when we were tearing down and said thanks.!!! I back up to the curb to unload and there are a few smokers outside " Hey howya doin?" We might get this industry going yet if we can get rid of all the negative crap.. ![]() After years of singing karaoke Id have never thunk it. As a Kj it took years to evolve to this attitude When a stranger walks up and asks "Do you have so & so by so & so?" My immediate response is "karaoke or DJ?" If its karaoke Ill say ok please fill out this slip and we can spell your name right and get you in the system.. If its DJ a quick search brings up the artists songs they look and OH could you play this one? Sure depending on time maybe all the way thru If you are dancing we play all of it.. A couple of weeks ago we had a table full of party goers It was the 21st birthday for a gal We jumped on that went over to her table and said whatever song who want to hear I or somebody will sing it.. If its a DJ song for a dance thats alright too!!! |
