Howdy fellas!
I noticed most of the techies were fellas...
I have a few questions fer ya. I just started hosting karaoke in downtown San Diego. I'm totally new at it, but because I am doing this, my parents have caught the karaoke fever and want to buy a home system.
I want them to buy a good one, because 1.) I am a fabulous offspring, and 2.) because I am going to have full usage of this machine whenever I stop by. And maybe someday I will use it for hosting events or somthin'. You know when they get sick of it.
I have found one online, sold by DTS Karaoke. It's a CAVs DVD - 203 G Super CDG Player. But heres the gravy (I think)...it is a package deal including 6 Chartbusters CDGs totalling about 2,700 songs. It comes with a remote and mic, and costs $625.
My parents have a big screen TV and two nice wireless mics (and a hot tub...wooo hooo! totally unrelated though...).
I think this is a good deal because they are starting from scratch and this is a good ammount of songs. All the standards. I have checked the playlists and I could probably spend a good long evening rusting my pipes on the songs listed...interspersed with soaking in ze haut tub.
These CDGs on there own run about 100 bucks a piece, and the machine itself is not expensive on its own. I feel this would be a good place to start for them. They could buy a couple regular ole karaoke CDs with the specialty songs they want. But they still have a sizeable standard selection as well.
I saw in a coupla past posts that not all of you think very highly of Cavs. Is there something wrong with this machine I should know about?
Am I krazy? Is this good? I know most of you are fancy KJs but I feel this system would be a good starter kit for them. Especially with the ammount of songs it comes with.
Whaddya think boys?

That machine is ok for home use. However, with the discs, remember discs do rend to get scratched and while a normal cdg may lose 1 maybe 2 songs with a small scratch, that same scratch on the Super CDG could lose a couple hundred songs.

you say not hard, but have you done it, Ollie?
Are you someone who's actually converted the supercdgs or at least made backups (DVDRs)?
Good job on the software. I've HEARD that it does it, but haven't spoken with anyone that actually has.

the demo will convert the first 50 tracks for you to test it and make sure that it works for you.

I own that Cavs model, great for home use. SCDGs not too bad to back up.
Would not use for gig. Too slow to load up songs.

Backups are easy just explore the DVD on your computer and copy the "CAVS_MCG" folder on to your hard drive and re burn it as a data file onto a blank DVD to make a new 1. That simple copy and paste! I've done it already. I've added 17 Super CDG's to my show and it's been working flawlessly. If 1 gets scratched I make a new 1. Originals all stay in My glove compartment.

I had the 203G and gave it to a friend. It might be ok for home but running a show is a real pain. It has extremely slow processor which makes for slow loading and pressing the stop often doesn't stop it as if it is in the program loop and doen't cache the input. So often it's click click click click trying to get it to stop...humerous athome but not too funny at a show. so many things have to be controled from the remote control which makes it a pain also. When a song is first loaded you use the remote to change the key, but when it reaches the beginning song cue point start the changed key reverts back to zero and has to be changed as it starts maybe too late to avoid music playing.Everytime asong is loaded ithas to be reset. I really did't keep it long enough even to get familiar with all the remote funtions but I do know I wasn't happy with it. Good luck.

I'd like to take you up on that. I've never even touched an SCDG disk so I have no clue. Is it a CD or a DVD disk? I assume that it's a compressed audio format along with (compressed??) CDG graphics file. Is that right? If so, what is the compressed audio format. Something widely known such as MP3 or something new CAVS invented?

my understanding it would have to be on a dvd type disc due to the amount of songs that they are capable of holding. I'll let frank tell you about his convertor.

Hi,
I'm not a KJ and I use Karaoke for Personal Use Only. I've BackedUp and created many Custom SCDG Discs. SCDG'S consists of Dat files in a folder named CAVS_MCG. Inside the Dat files are: .MCG and .MP3 files. To backup a SCDG, load disc in dvd drive, save the CAVS_MCG file to your HD. Drag and drop the CAVS_MCG folder into Nero's Burning ROM or simular burning software and burn to a DL DVD (DVD9). I also have a CAVS 203G which plays the SCDG'S effortlessly.
I've found a software called CDGFIX that will:
Repair CDG'S...Graphics, Out of Sinc, Change Colors
Backup and Convert SCDG to CDG and vice versa
Convert CDG to NCG (JB199 Format)
Create an INX Menu, CVS List, Songbook
Remove Duplicates
No Encoder or Decoder Need.
Simply Load a SCDG or CDG
Rename CDG Tracks...SCDG Auto Rename
Export to format of your choice.
Has anybody else tried this software?
Kind Regards,
sw00000p
