Hello everyone,

I've been gone a while, I got the home PC hard drive reformatted and then it would not allow me to reenter KS. I could only view the entries from my work PC, but obviously could not respond. Not even my notebook at work was operable?!  Kept trying for weeks and then suddenly it lets me reenter?!  I'm good with PC's, but this one had me stumped. Tried different servers, Google, MSN etc. to no avail. Now I'm back and I refuse to look a gift horse in the mouth, so here goes...

Just got the dance lights hooked up, their working great! Got them hooked up to be able to control at my KJ booth for quick on/off selection and now I need more...LOTS MORE dance selection numbers. I play filler when there's no singers and sometimes thats most of the night (when slow).

My favorites for the lights application are...

Family Affair - Mary J. Blige
Carribean Queen - Billy Ocean

There's a few more, I just can't think of them right now, but I obviously can't play the same songs continuously so I need to formulate a dance music list for this occasion. Also, I try not to play the same song twice in one night, but sometimes I do depending on the turnover of the crowd, what's your operational guidelines on this?

All help is appreciated... :)

Well I don't believe in the filler music (entire songs) thing if you don't have singers, that's when I will sing until I do - it's karaoke, if people see dance music playing, they aren't going to be in a karaoke frame of mind (and may not put up songs to sing at all), or at the very least if I can't sing I will play the karaoke versions with the words on the screen - this sometimes helps gets singers up and/or interested.  Take requests from the audience to sing.  I do hope you advertise that you do both karaoke/dance music, I know I would hate to go into a place that advertised karaoke, just to hear dance music, for me I wouldn't even ask if karaoke was going on, may have a drink & leave to the next advertised karaoke spot - i've talked with others in the forums that will do the same thing - although they usually don't even stay for a drink.  I can hear regular music whenever.
But besides that, when I do throw a rare dance song in, it's generally a line dance type song.  I try not to put these songs in regularly & only if I get enough requests throughout the night.  Never just regular music to get people dancing, they dance enough to the karaoke music majority of the time.

I'm with Lonny on this.

I will sometimes lead in before the show with music (if I start at 9 and I'm set up at 8:30). Otherwise it's karaoke only.

If I'm DJing, and it's a younger crowd I like Wreckx N Effect - Rump Shaker (yeah sure I'm old...but that's pretty new for me). If it's an older crowd YMCA by the Village People. Then if you just want to get them riled up, Who Let the Dogs Out by Baha Men. I also like to play re-mixes that are sped up and have a hard pumping bass and drum track.

Otherwise I ask the audience what they want...usually you get a lot of good requests once you play something that get's people going.

Now you have to understand, that I'm 55 years old, so this is pretty good for me.

I usually can still get the crowd going...even at my age.

As far as playing a song over during the night, in Karaoke, I hate to do that. Ther's a long list of reasons why.

DJing, if you mix it out a ways (couple hours), it's okay, particularly if it's a song that pumped the crowd. I don't think turnover makes any difference. If you move the song out far enough people don't even know.

Thanks everybody for the responses...kepp them coming! I'll sample every one of them and add to the newly formed "dance list" if I have them.

Lonman, Your right about the using of filler music trumping the desires of a Karaoke singer. I've got it posted throughout the bar that if there's no singers for Karaoke, just put in a request for a filler song and if I have it, it will be played. I've also noticed that playing the Karaoke version of songs vs. the MP3 of it will encourage singers to come forth (your right there also). As far as singing myself...I have'nt did it yet (helped one person one night), but have no desire to sing. Have had some people come in and have never sung before and they try it once, and thereafter they always seem to sing on the next return...something bewitching about this art.

Dancing Queen - Abba, that's a good one...women love that! "Bust a move" also comes to mind now. I've used some of these mentioned before, but I've seen a lot that I have not heard before, so I will sample them if I have them and add to the "Dance List".

Thanks again everyone for the inputs and keep them coming, I'm gonna cut and past a final list and take to the bar for useage. As far as getting the ladies booty shakin...I got the best seat in the house for that, both figuratively and factually :D

"Crazy B&tch" as well...

Some of my favorites are:

Wreckx n Effects - Rump Shaker
Digital Underground - Humpty Dance
Naughty By Nature - OPP
Gwen Stefani - Sweet Escape
Snoop Dogg - Gin & Juice
Nelly - Pimp Juice
Usher - Yeah
Akon & Eminem - Smack That
NWA - Fxck the Police  (This is riot inducing, play with caution).  :)

I generally will play this kind of stuff toward the end of the evening when folks are getting kind of jumpy.  Better them jumping around getty sweaty then jumping on each other.  The thing about the music is it gets more people involved.  I keep it to a miminum because as a recovering singer, I know what it's like to come out to a show and want to get up as many times as possible and how music cuts into the action.

Thanks again for all the entries everyone, I've already formulated a dance list from the first half entries (MP3'S) and will continue to add them as they come in. I'm also making a list that includes the karaoke versions that I have of the songs also, programming the Instatune buttons on Compuhost for instant access. Like I mentioned before, when you play the karaoke version on the second overhead screen, the crowd sings the song from their seats...as long as they're happy...I'm happy. I only play the filler/dance - MP3's/karaoke versions when there's a lack of singers. It's great to have singers request dance songs as they did Sat. night...such as Soul Man/Get Down Tonight/Family Affair etc. Makes the job much more easier and enjoyable.

Had a birthday crowd Saturday night and it was great to see 5-6 couples singing/drinking and danicing on the small dance floor with the lights going...it was great!

All these songs will be searched and catargorized for future use....thanks for the additional suggestions Babs/Steve Kaplan/oneofakind864/Croakdog and knightshow.

Play that Funky Music....  didn't see this one.  Most people start dancing when I do this one (the KJ I frequent usually plays this as the closer too-- sometimes I sing it)

Brick House (already mentioned)
