Post subject:  Dolby Digital/AC3 Mixing?

Greetings,

I am new to karaoke and have a question about mixing into a AC3 signal.  I performed a forum search but wasn't able to find what I needed.

I have a cheap (?) Nippon NP-3500K in which I am mixing the RCA outputs from a Denon-910 DVD player with my mics.  From there, I go to my Yamaha RX-V2500, with RCA in.

My DVD player seems to only use one set of outputs at time but I might have a to check again.  For my surround sound receiver, I can electronically choose whether I am trying to detect my DVD's player AC3 (over optical) output or RCA outputs.  I do this because my DVD player is also my main movie watching player as well.

My main question is regarding the using Dolby Digital encoded karaoke DVDs.  I can only mix RCA out with my mixer.  It seems like I would need a mixer that can take in mics and mix with a Dolby Digital code stream, then send this to one input on my receiver to get the benefits of the 5.1 signal.

Perhaps the Dolby Digital data is not true surround sound but just contains two separate sets of stereo signals.   I figured that it could indeed be a surround sound recording being there are are music DVDs and, even more popular, DVDs of concerts recorded in 5.1.

Thanks,

Iphilologus
