Excellent advice Kappy.   You sound like someone I know very well.

If I go out in public, I try to dress presentably, comb my hair, brush my tooth, etc.

Same goes for my sound when I perform in public.  In such a case I have even more responsibility to paying patrons IMO. My presentation is how I will be known. If you host music as a profession,  by definition of "profession" you SHOULD take pride in your work and make the best presentation you can.  Your sound system matters, as does your ability to set-up and use the system you own.  If you feel you can't do the greatest job alone,  have someone else who does what you can't with you. IT'S YOUR SHOW !  Take pride in it.

My OWN feeling, is that if you are in an area of "art" that involves sound, KEEP your aesthetic areas of sensitivity developed to better appreciate this artistic area. Try to even tweak your home system to sound the best it can in a room,  don't learn to settle for poorer sound quality. An artist appreciates the finer areas of his craft IMO...  If as a performing artist, your instrument is CD/Tape or turntable.. Play it well.

Makes a great monitor system, would I use for club mains - no.  Known a few that have owned these trying to do clubs with them, they either ended up taking them back for more powerful gear or they added powered subs which defeats the portability factor, still not as bad, but....For home use, it would be fine.

Matching Amps and Speakers:

When looking at buying speakers it can be confusing trying to figure what is the best speaker for your application. Speaker ratings are confusing; some are listed at 500 watts program – 1000 watts peak, some list “continuous” watt ratings.

The suggested match up is to use an amp that is listed as twice the watts as your continuous rating on your speaker.

Currently I am using the Yamaha SV15 with a Crown XLS602 amp rated at 380watts x 2 @8ohms. The rating on the speakers are 500/1000 program/peak
Am I “under powering” these speakers?

I have had no problems so far but I am looking for another set of speakers and wonder if I am better off using the Yamaha BR15(or similar)  which is rated at 250/500 program / peak?

Don't use a dual 15" for karaoke.  Reason being you need to get your mains up over the crowd, these a floor speakers & unless you have a rather high stage to work with, it isn't going to produce much sound, especially in the back.
Recommend (if you want to stay with JBL) JBL JRX115 mains on stands & JBL JRX118 subs.  With ANY speaker you want to make sure you have the correct power pushing them.  The 115 need 500 watts per speaker into 8 ohms.  The subs need 700 watts per speaker into 8 ohms - now to save money here & still sound great, you can get an amp that pushes 1400 watts into 4 ohms BRIDGED then run both speakers paralleled in bridge mode.  This means you will need 2 amps & external crossover.  Systems like this is more versatile to play in difference sized rooms.
