I'm near Sacramento....and my lord is it boiling hot here right now. Imagine, can't afford a house, horrible allergies, AND boiling hot. Might as well be in the South cuz at least we could afford a dang house there.

You could always move up here!  It was a little overcast today and in the 60's...
GREAT weather!

And lots of places here run a first come first serve rotation.

And I give awesome hugs... just ask my fiance!  Er, on second thought, don't...

Matt, in Alaska it's legal under state statute (not federal) that you can grow the plants in your own home, you can also have up to (IIRC) 4 oz. in your own home.  It was a major case decision that was overturned about a year ago up here that allows this.  Still can't transport, sell, or buy it!

I don't know why it's not more popular.

Let's see....

The state pays you to live here.
The winters in the southeast and south central are WARMER than most of the midwest states.
There are lots of places to sing karaoke.
There's plenty of work in most fields.
Oh, yea... the weed thing that already came up (if you're into that sort of thing)

Lots of mountains, hunting, fishing, kayaking, and lots of other outdoor activities, including dog mushing and snow skiing.

I love it here and I moved here from FLORIDA!

Beaches are rocky, as would be expected.  We sometimes have sandy beaches but they're few and far between.  Nothing here like the redneck riviera - Orange Beach, Alabama to Panama City, Florida.  No mullet toss, no Florabama Lounge, no shark rodeo....

For cable companies, we have ACS, GCI, and a number of small independent cable companies.  They're mostly Alaska only companies so chances are you've never heard of them.

BTW, I grew up in Pensacola, Florida; and lived in the Orlando area for 6 years (Astatula, Eustis, Oviedo, and Orlando).  I don't miss it at all (except for my family that's still in Pensacola).  I do love the mountains and everything else Alaska has to offer though!

I think the best I ever saw was a guy who did it "Karaoke by Invitation".
You did not get up unless he invited you up. He gave you a 3 song set then you were done until he might invite you up to sing again.  It all was very smooth and always a packed house.  I thought it was very interesting way to do it.

I think I speak for many of us when I say "What?!?"

After a person sings their 3 songs, why in the world would they stick around hoping to sing again?  Personally, I'd be out the door and down the road before my third song fades out, especially with a packed house.

How does he decide who got the invitations, bribery or boob size?

Completely agree.  There is absolutely no fairness in that method.  The host gets to pick who he/she wants to sing?
Sorry, it may have been a packed house, but with no understanding how or why - only reason I can think of is that it was pretty much the only place around.

I don't think I'd stick around to see if I get to sing 3 songs!    Where was this show?

I can only see doing this if you are doing a 'show' where the people are there to be entertained, and not to sing.  Being invited to sing in the 'show' would be done the week before, with a list of x # of people and set up in advance.

I seem to remember someone doing something like this that posts here on the board and he does very well.  Sort of karaoke with a twist.  He performs in costume a variety of tunes and has other singers fill in while he changes.  The fill in positions are by invitation.

People go for the show, not to sing... something like this might go over.... but sitting and waiting to see if you 'rate' so you can sing?  I'll go elsewhere.

Now right off the bat i will say that i'm not a KJ but i have done it, I do however frequent karaoke bars, and find that the rotation with new patrons at the end seems to work there. everybody knows the rules and once in a while they get complainers, but for the most part everybody is happy with the way it works.Like others have said its a pain in the butt when you've been there all night and somebody new gets put in ahead of you, but if newbies are put in at the end, making the rotation longer it doesn't bother most folks, cause they know their spot and when they'll be up again. Our KJ makes an effort to get everybody in before close and if she can't then the newbies who haven't sung get to sing at the end of the night at least,we don't mind giving up our last songs to someone who hasn't sung yet, after we've been there singing all night.

Would you go to a bank and let people cut in line, just because overall the time to wait on everybody is still the same?? The people that are getting "cut in front of" don't happen to FEEL that way! YES, the total singers served is still the same. No rotation is ever going to shorten the wait for anybody.

[[glow=orange][/glow]   I say that if a person has been in the line at the bank 6 times in one day, he/she has too much money!  LOL
so someone who get to sing 5 songs because they were there at 9:00 on the dot gets upset because someone who comes in at the end of the night  only get to sing one song because the KJ mixed them into the rotation and the other person doen't get to sing 6.

Why did the person come in so late? Was it that they don't get of work untill the. Did they have a personal commitment they had to attend?

If they came in so they may sing a song or two before closing the why not?

Are they a regular custome who usually come in at the start and stays all night?

Maybe it is a new singer?

Maybe the new singer will become a regular singer who come in earlier in the night in the future?

I mix my rotation and try to get every one a chance to sing. The ones who come early or the one they show up late.

Maybe the were at a different bar and didn't like it so they started looke for a new place.

There are many reasons why someone shows up late.
