It takes a good ear and you must give a cr*p about what it sounds like.

That & knowing HOW to use the equipment is the biggest one. I am willing to bet that over half of the karaoke hosts out there don't know how to properly use the equipment they are working on.

Some cant hear it, some don't know what to do when they do hear it, and some just don't give a darn.
When I train someone new I insist that they follow the proceedure that I posted earlier. If I find them not following my guidelines after a couple of warnings then they are down the road. What's interesting is that I will take several gigs to train them on sound mixing and get them doing it right, then I go away for a few shows to let them get their feet wet and then come back only to find they are doing something totally different and then are offended when I ask them to get back on track. Very frustrating....they want to learn but then go and do it their way when your not looking.
It is very hard to find KJ's to hire that know how to mix music these days. I'm talking about employees.
I have one fellow that has worked for me now for 1-1/2 years and he treats it like his business. He works well with the customers, handles my equipment with care, mixes sometimes better than I do, and is an excellent singer. Really hard to find someone with all those qualities.

I spent 3 months in the basement listening to all types and styles of music. I would EQ each one to my ear. I listened to and sang hundreds of songs. Then I noticed where the knobs were for each song. After a while they all started to be basically in the same general spot. They never get moved now. All I ever move is the volume and change the reverb. I make sure the mikes are not redlined. We had a DJ working for us that thought he had to mix everybody totally for each song. By the end of the night he had things so screwed up nothing sounded right. I was ready to put a piece of plexiglass over everything but the volume slides. Once in every couple of months someone will say to me boy that song is really tinny or really bassy. It's only three minutes, it will be over soon. Just the volume. If you pretend you're doing something they think you did. Works every time. Don't get me wrong I am real picky about how everyone sounds. You have to learn how to hear 50 feet across the room, from behind your table. Takes a lot of talent. Remember this, every thing you put in your system, new mikes, new amp, new effects, new mixer changes the EQ. You will need to reset the EQ. I don't set anything different from room to room. Just the volume. I can carry on a conversation during a song but I'm still listening to what's going on and I can make adjustments to the volume if need be. Mixing is a talent. I worked with welders for twenty years that still can't weld. Just be cause you're a KJ don't mean S**T, if you ain't one.

Sure a few of us do, nice reverberation if it's aluminum and 55 gallon's at least (and empty) !

Bigdog, Did anything more ever come of the "Song dedication to Ralph" event early April ? Or did this whole thing blow over ? Just looked back at a few posts, and this got me wondering how that episode ever ironed out, assuming it did.

Well, as I said before I never got to see who Ralph was. If he has been back checking me out, I can't say. Nothing official has come of it. The bar got broken into a few weeks ago, but it wasn't Ralph.

I'm so glad that turned out okay. It sounded like a horrible situation to be put in.

If I knew what was really going on, I wouldn't have done it. I wasn't happy about it and I would have apologized to Ralph, if I knew who he was. He could have taken the bridge.

I still wonder if Ralph ever existed. I'd be asking this owner on one of his more straightforward appearing nights. Even if it means waiting for an ocassion such as when he accidently get's peppermint or tabasco in his eye. I'd be curious LOL

I bet if Bigdog had a friend of his call the bar owner some night, saying "It's Ralph", the bar owner would say, "Ralph ? I don't know a Ralph."
