Aw Shucks, I'm gonna want a hug now, I think everyone contributes a lot to this site, I read all the posts and I know we all form our own opinions, oh by the way, if I come to Australia for a visit can I stay with ya?? I am thinking of going next year for 10 days, it is something I have always wanted to do, oh Debra (my little Star... ) I love your new pic, and Matt you always jump into the discussion group with both feet and that is admirable. My faves on line are Big Jimmy C, Lonman, and of course JD and LaLinda who I have met. The one thing I like best about what we discuss is that we keep the Karaoke topics lively to say the least.
As long as I have participated, this is still one of the best sites to participate in, and I applaud you all for your contributions....(that'll cost ya all a $1.)lol I am a little under the weather today and have to go to the doctors for my latest test results that I took 2 weeks ago, I think my Dr found a stray disc stuck somewhere in my leg, (Hmmm..) well I think the next discussion should be:
Men or Women?? Who sings the best Karaoke?? (I say both!!!lol)

Wow! I never thought her post would create so much discussion. Both Micki and I have suggested the bottled water thing to the bar tenders before, and will continue to do if they complain about water drinkers.
I believe her question was in reference to a single person in particular, and no, she is not buying other people drinks. She's about 26, lives with her mother, never holds a job more than a month or so, has at least one child which the courts have removed from her, and yes, she does drink, but only when other people buy them for her, cuz she has no money (see the no job thing above). And no, we don't spend all our time checking out who is drinking or not, but it's kind of hard to ignore her when she's constantly got her large posterior (not the words I really wanted to use) in you're way, trying to find out how soon till she's up next. She's loud, crude, and obnoxious, however, she is a good singer. (see, I can think of at least one nice thing about her!)
Actually, we don't dislike her, we just don't know how to let her know that she's not doing us a favor showing up every night, CUZ SHE THINKS SHE IS!

Thank you Mike Valentino for the compliment, Its great to get one once in a while.
I feel that I almost know you. Not in the physical sense but the mental sense.
You are one of my favorites as well. You are a man who overcame a serious hearing impairment to become KJ of the year.
Who can argue with that kind of hard work and dedication and love of the game, Kinda like a one armed swimmer winning the olympic gold.
Thanks for your expertise, and your presence.
Take care, BJC

Thanks Michelle, "Spunky?" I guess its a positive description, Or I hope so. Its a pic from late 98. Hopefully I will be redoing my site soon and adding a ton of pics. I'll let everyone know.
I think Mike V was being dragged through the mud for no reason at all for a while. I thought I would add my opinion of him.
Rock On! BJC

I have now read this whole thread now here are my two cents
I can remember a time in the not so distant past when times were tough.
I had lost my job becuase the business i worked for closed it's doors.
happened right after christmas. My apartment was sold out from under me and I had to move. All my belongings I had in storage were stolen.
I didn't have a dime to my name. I was lucky to get food in my belly.
I was so depressed I actually considered stepping off the planet if you know what I mean.
There was only one thing keeping me from doing it. KARAOKE.
It was the only thing that brought some joy in my life. Was I a water drinker? YUP I became good friends with the KJ. he is my friend to this day. I would always help him unload and set up his equipment. One night he paid me for it. I told him I couldn't except the money. He wouldn't take no for an answer. So I used the money to buy a meal and my soda for the night. I also tipped the bartender what I could. So in the end the money went back to him anyway I helped him for about a year even after i found another job. During that time i met my now wife
She doesnt sing. She came to karaoke for one reason to hear me and i didnt even know it for a very long time
So dont knock the water drinkers we dont always know the reasons why.
And if ya have the extra funds help them out It just might be keepin them alive. And who knows how you will affect their lives.

Kahuna...
But what you was doing is FAR more different than some leech sitting at a table, nursing a coke, and saying that they are helping the bar.
You helped out the KJ. When you got paid, you put it all back into the bar (TALK ABOUT COMMENDABLE!!!)...
karaoke saved my life too, although I wasn't as down as you were. I was more into a depression so vast I wasn't aware of it until after I had crawled out of it. What had helped me immensely was looking forward to karaoke nights, and getting ready to go there... "Oh boy, I'm gonna NAIL this one tonight!!" I remember saying to myself.
And then finally, I was mostly whole, and I looked back at where I had travelled, and I thanked God above for helping support me, even though I didn't realize it at the time!
Matt
P.S. Jimmy IS Spunky!! C'mere you hunka hunka man!!

I think what Kahuna was saying is don't make assumptions about people and their means. After being a cop for many years, I learned that lesson very quick.

Yes Assumptions. We all know what happens when we assume things
You make an @$$ out of You and me.
Assumptions are very dangerous things. this week I lost what I thought was a very good friend because of assumptions. I am a firm believer in making sure of something before any action is taken. Apaarently He was not.
It also reminds me of something I said to another friend several months ago. Jesus told us to love our neighbor but He didn't live next to mine

We have lost our way boys and girls. Lets retrack.
The bottom line:
#1 - Venue has karaoke
#2 - Venue attracts customers
#3 - Customers drink water
#4 - Venue is out of business
Don't think for any moment in time that personal problems figure into the above mentioned categories.
It just don't pay the bills.

I can see your point Jimmy but
The only time I think this becomes a problem is when the majority of the customers drink water but not when some poor guy down on his luck has a glass of water.
And it's rediculous to think that any club or bar is going to go out of business when a few folks drink water. If they do then I can assure there is a lot more to it than a glass of water.

I am NOT a therapist or a baby sitter I work to earn money to support my family. I feel for those who are less fortunate, but I am in business to do what Kahuna did once he found work. I have bought a drink for an unfortunate but to come out regularly to sing for free is NOT a commendable thing.
I could not in good conscience walk into a business and expect service for free. The KJ and waitstaff all have families and to take up the time and space of people paying for the service they receive in the form of ordering so they can sing (the price of admission) is unbelievable. You say you were saved by karaoke, you seem to think there is nothing wrong. Granted you did help the KJ and did buy from the establishment. What do or did you do for a living? Did you do it for free daily? Expect to let others use your services for free daily? Why do people think karaoke is a FREE service? Or that a KJ and the venue OWE it to people to just come in sit and sing?
I do free or reduced for family or I choose who I do benefits for. I feel for your situation but that is not my fault, I am a business and as such paying customers make my money. All are equal and treated well, the price to admission to sing is a purchase of Soda, Coffee, Water, Food, or Alcohol. Do restaurants serve free dinners just because someone sits and orders? Do gas stations give gasoline away because a guy pulls up with no money? Do taxis's drive people around without paying? This is not rocket science.

Sometimes a person just needs to walk a mile in another's shoes to appreciate their plight. I can certainly see both sides of this issue ... but I can't see a bar going out of business from water drinkers ... ya just don't see too many of 'em. I think the KJ that took you under his wing, Kahuna, had a big heart and maybe had even 'been there'. We all make decisions every day ... and each instance is different. Ya just gotta do what you think is right. JMHO.

As longs as were on the subject of tthe "whole" business
There is an establishment in town that has effectively screwed a KJ friend of mine. The Barteder is a coke addict who is a Byatch to EVERYONE.
She treats everyone rudely unless they tip her for every drink. If you buy a soda she keeps your change!
the owner won't get rid of her because she does his books. She has killed his business but he is to retarded to see it.
No one goes there to do karaoke anymore. No one eats in his restaurant anymore. No one goes there to even drink anymore just the die hard drunks.
I could be choking to death on a pretzel and I wouln't be able to get a glass of water to save my life even if I paid for it!
One night my friends ordered food. She threw it on their table and practically demanded a tip.
I finally had enough. I went up to her slammed a penny on the bar said heres your f#ckin tip and I want change back.
You should have heard the applause.
Let's face it folks the economy sucks. I start my tip at twenty percent but by GOD don't act like I owe you one.You screw up my order it drops.
You forget about me it drops.
You treat me rude and act like its a blessing on me that your serving me.
IT DROPS.
I tip KJ's too.
skip me in rotation more than twice it drops.
Play DJ music all night long when I'm there to sing. It drops.
FACE IT When I go out I or my friends and I spend more than enough money to cover the very few water drinkers.
the LCB in my state has raised all their prices and you can bet it wasn't because of a few water drinkers.
In the mean time....Have a beer on me. Or if ya like a glass of water
Treat me right and I'll even tip ya for bringing mme that glass of water

Debra, I hope you ask the venue for extra money for performing the extra service of making sure that their customers are buying something. Sometimes at my shows I find myself wishing I had some water drinkers there to balance out the drunks.

I think a good point to make is, the BAR won't go out of business serving water to a few people. But if paying the KJ becomes too expensive because he's got too many water drinkers...
The bar isn't out of business... WE are!
