my pet peeve is the generalized statement that says pirates use poor (or crappy) equipment. Kindly STOP equating Pirate = Poor Equipment. I'm not condoning those who run a show with a pirated library, but not all of them run a lousy (poor equipment) show. In fact, there are many legitimate KJs out there whose equipment sucks. I've been to many shows where the KJ is using a pirated library, and their show was GREAT!
I guess I'm forced to wonder why you bothered to support a show who's a known pirate? I've gotten up and walked out of shows that were that way. In no way would I support one!

Good show or not.

There's a guy locally who's a phenominal success with his shows who's the most blatant pirate I've ever seen. He tries to cover it by buying discs from people who are selling their libraries, but I know for a fact he doesn't have SIX SC8125s! LOL!

Cueball made a very keen observation.

One of the first erroneous rants I experienced on this forum began after BigDog complained about pirates and asked what could be done?

Posters went on and on chastising him about why he shouldn't, as a real professional, worry about pirates. Pirates, it was stated, have inferior equipment; pirates don't know what they're doing; pirates have 60000 songs with a bunch of duplicates.

Being new at the time, I held off though I had wanted to come to BigDogs defense.

Now there are those who probably realized, using simple math, that a library of 60,000, even with four identical tracks of each song.... well THAT'S STILL 15000 distinct tracks... more than the average show carries.

Equipment... well since pirates don't have to pay much for their library, might not they have spent MORE on their equipment than you?

And as to supporting pirates.... has anyone ever gone to a show where the KJ advertises that pirated tracks are in use? And the average customer has no idea what pirating is in the entertainment business, anyway!

And as for me.... I walked in and out of many shows without necessarily staying. I don't have to support a show to evaluate the equipment in use...

Lastly... I'll take you to many completely legal shows in S FL that are successful with less than the best equipment.. So... why can't a show using pirated material be successful with other than good equipment?

Yeah... I have to agree that sharing anything with a room full of strangers is a bad idea. Not everyone is a hand washer especially when they are drunk or in a hurry. Yuckie!!!! Although.... I am sure you share those same nasty little germs on the mic!

Okay, Cue - confessing it was my line that you quoted and I said it because IN THIS AREA THE PIRATES DO USE SUBSTANDARD EQUIPMENT...and then they employ people who don't know squat about mixing sound. (You notice I said 'we live...' not WE ALL ... )

Every pirate I can think of IN THIS AREA, and there are 3 mainly, have throw-together systems with copied hard drives. Sure, almost any song you can ask for but they can't tell you the manu; their books are years and years old because with 100,000 songs you can't keep reprinting books. They work a place for a while until it's run into the ground and move on to the next.

I'm not suggesting everyone has to live in pirate land - I am saying that specifically in THIS area the pirates run substandard shows. I don't know about anywhere else and would NOT assume to suggest that I do. Probably lots of really nice pirates around but not here. I don't go to their shows even if they're the only show that night and they're right around the corner.

Matt, to answer your question.....

Because, like many other singers that go to Karaoke shows, I go to hang out with my friends, and to get my "Karaoke Fix." Many Singers (even tho they may bring their own discs with them), do not know if the KJ is a "Pirate" or not. Plus, many of them wouldn't know the difference. Even I don't claim to be 100 percent certain that someone I know is a "Pirate." I may have my suspicions of a few, and some I may be absolutely positive about.

If I happen to like the place that I'm attending, I'm not walking out of the place just because the KJ is operating with a pirated library. Aside from that, If I were to say something, do you think Management is going to care???... We (the people of this Forum) have been through this conversation before... All Management cares about is the "Bottom Line." Also, even if I were to suddenly become self-righteous, other people aren't going to walk out with me just because of that. I may be well-known in my corner of the country (in our Karaoke circuits), but I definitely don't carry that kind of clout.... If I did, maybe all these people would be coming to my shows (the few that I might do in the year) instead of me being lucky to have 3 people (from a mailing list of over 100) attend my show.

I have 6 of that disc as well, 2 in active libraries & 1 new in wrap & 3 now in back up status. Bought 3 back in 94 when they were being pulled from the shelves st $25 each & 1 was given to me & 2 bought used from customers..

If I boycotted EVERY karaoke show around here that used copied discs or illegal hard drives, I'd have to start bowling again on weekends instead because there wouldn't be any place for me to sing at. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. If you don't the terrorists....I mean the pirates win.

copied discs doesn't necessarily equate to a pirate. They could just be protecting their investment by running off the backups.

Cuey, the way I see it, you have nobody to blame but yourselves.

I DO make a point of telling the management or owners if the kj is a pirate. "Believe me, I wouldn't want to be you when this person gets busted."

Because it's not going to just be him. It'll be venues that have been told he's in copyright violation! Those that knowingly hire him and know what they're doing. This is why many pirates get gigs. They undercut because they have a lower bottom line.

I refuse to support such things. And yes, I'd tell my friends that I don't want to go to that gig because it's a known pirate running it. And if they like karaoke, and want to continue to see more and more songs produced, they'll do everything in their power to stop pirates. The biggest power we as consumers have is the ability to not frequent a place like that. And just so the owner knows why he's losing business, you should tell them.

THAT's the bottom line explained in terms they can understand.

Now that SC has openly come out in support of digital kjs that can prove their discs, we really have to step up OUR game!

There are just so MANY shows that are advertising 100% digital with over 50,000 songs, and that they can get any song for you by the following week, if they don't already have it, that you can't help but assume that these shows are not 100% legit. It has also been pointed out that many karaoke patrons don't own their own CDG discs. Do you think that these patrons know or care about karaoke piracy? I doubt it. They just want to sing their favorite songs. If the bar is packed, the bar owner doesn't care either. The karaoke business has been making threats of prosecution for years. How many KJ's have been shut down for using an illegal hard drive? How many multi riggers have been busted??? The biggest karaoke store in this area runs over a dozen shows a week and all of their rigs are now using CAVS machines or something similar, with the exact same library for every set up. They used to run discs and every one that got pulled out was a CDR.

SC is making it easy, and I think with their stance, other manus are going to follow suit.

If they get audited, they have to prove one disc for every rig they have, or they'll be reported for copyright infringement, theft, and a whole slew of as many charges as they can report. Unsure who the auditors are, but with a rock solid stance supporting digital kjs, there's nowhere for the pirates to turn other than becoming "legit". Most will scurry away!

I'll agree that when you see what you saw, it's easy to assume that. And you're probably 100% correct!

I think it's up to US as the legit computer folks to educate the karaokers!

I can legally get any disc that is available by the next show anytime I want. Do I do it, yes in certain situations I do. I look at legal downloads first before buying a disc for one or two songs. If I can't find it legally then I don't get it period.

And when I check my e-mail and I've got one that says Enhance Your Length, but in the body of the e-mail it says check out this video of my cousin and his horny chickens, I assume that the real intent of the e-mail was to get me to watch the video, just like BFFL's post that starts out with a subject of Got a new pet peeve, anybody else, then concludes with, how would you have handled this situation?

Who wants a fight? :withstupid:

I'm seriously befuddled on why you continue to beat this drum, so the only explanation has to be that YOU are the one wanting a fight..
